The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University, Fullerton (http://chemistry.fullerton.edu) invites applications for a full-time, Equipment Technician III – Electro-Mechanical position with appointment to begin Fall 2021.

Candidates are expected to repair and maintain teaching and research electronic and mechanical analytical instrumentation. A significant part of the job is to perform routine and preventive maintenance on electro-mechanical equipment in the teaching and research labs, develop plans, methods, and techniques to prevent and rectify electrical and mechanical equipment malfunctions. Technicians will test teaching lab equipment to maintain readiness for each term, repairing malfunctions when found. Technicians also assist faculty in design and fabrication of prototype electro-mechanical equipment or modification of existing equipment, prepare for and install new equipment acquired by the department and faculty members, train students, staff, and faculty on the proper use of scientific equipment, which often has electronics and control software, and consult with faculty and vendors in determining new equipment purchases. Occasionally, technicians will train, oversee, and coordinate activities of student assistant. Preference will be given to candidates whose research involves major instrumentation currently available in the department including EPR, NMR, and powder XRD. Interdisciplinary research collaborations within the department, college or university are encouraged.

 

Primary Duties and Major Job Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain teaching and research electronic and mechanical analytical instrumentation in teaching and research laboratories
  • Test teaching lab equipment to maintain readiness for use each term, repairing malfunctions when found
  • Develop plans, methods, standard operating procedures and techniques to prevent and rectify electrical and mechanical equipment malfunctions
  • Assist faculty in design and fabrication of prototype electronic and mechanical equipment or modification of existing equipment
  • Prepare for and install new electronic and mechanical equipment acquired by the department and faculty members
  • Train students, staff and faculty on the proper use of scientific equipment, and its accompanying computer software
  • Consult with faculty and vendors in determining new equipment purchases for teaching and research laboratories
  • Train, oversees, und coordinate activities of student assistant(s)

 

Essential Qualifications 

A bachelor’s degree in a scientific field and/or a degree in electronics or equivalent job-related experience of at least three years on a progressive level. Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of electronic and mechanical instrumentation and accompanying computer-controlled software. Thorough knowledge of equipment design, repair and troubleshooting and overhaul of electronic and mechanical equipment. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with students, staff, faculty, and vendors. Ability to make mathematical computations as required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in maintaining and/or repairing sophisticated laboratory equipment such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), spectrometers, Liquid Chromatography and Gas Chromatography instruments, and Mass Spectrometers. General knowledge or electronic and mechanical test equipment and equipment used in teaching and research laboratories. Knowledge of equipment design and equipment computer interfacing. Ability to write standard operating procedures for electronic and mechanical equipment and to train students, staff and faculty on use of that equipment.
