Job Description

The Senior RF Engineer supports the Advanced Jammers and Decoys Branch (AJDB) within the RF Photonics and Advanced Materials (RFPAM) Division within the Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL) at Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). The Senior RF Engineer will build and expand GTRIs research portfolio in the areas of microwave RF integrated circuit design and modeling, and advance the technology readiness level of high-impact technologies. Additionally, the Senior Researcher will perform research in the fields of System Engineering and Microwave Photonics Engineering with focuses on: system requirements development, RF/photonic theory, millimeter-wave design and analysis, and advanced communication networks and theory.

Job Duties:

The job responsibilities for this position include:

  • Perform research in the field of Microwave Engineering to include: RF theory, modeling, millimeter-wave design and analysis, and advanced microelectronics
  • Design, model, and layout RF integrated circuit designs using common PCB tools (Altium Designer, Cadence, or similar) and perform simulation of RF photonic component and system simulation via ADS, Genesys, HFSS, or equivalent software tools
  • Assist in the design, development, and demonstration of advanced semiconductor materials, components, and devices
  • Support business development activities among DoD program offices via the preparation of proposals and white papers

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer engineering, aerospace engineering, Microwave Engineering, Physics and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer engineering, aerospace engineering, Microwave Engineering, Physics and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer engineering, aerospace engineering, Microwave Engineering, Physics and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer engineering, aerospace engineering, Microwave Engineering, Physics and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer engineering, aerospace engineering, Microwave Engineering, Physics and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of RF theory and components: Transmission line theory, Impedance matching techniques, waveguide and coaxial components such as connectors, impedance transformers, power dividers, phase shifters, switches, filters, and transducers
  • Experience using common RF test equipment (spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, noise figure meters, power meters, and signal analyzers) and/or antenna chambers
  • Experience with 3D RF simulation software (HFSS, CST, FEKO, or similar)
  • Experience with 2D RF simulation software (ADS, Designer, or similar)
  • Familiarity with PCB layout tools (Altium Designer, Cadence or similar)
  • Design, development, and demonstration of EW experiments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in applied research and development
  • Programming skills in MATLAB and Python
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with Linux and open-source tools
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a dynamic team environment
  • Experience in leading research projects and managing researchers

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
