Environmental Geophysics Scientific Engineering Associate (Climate & Ecosystems) - 85050
Organization:  CE-Climate & Ecosystems

Berkeley Lab’s Climate & Ecosystem Sciences Division (https://eesa.lbl.gov/) has an opening for a Environmental Geophysics (https://eesa.lbl.gov/capabilities/environmental-geophysics/) Scientific Engineering Associate (SEA). The incumbent will work on various technology developments in the field of internet of things (IoT) and in particular microcontroller, hardware, software and signal processing. In addition, the incumbent will maintain and develop Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms and distributed sensor networks. You will work with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists to improve predictive understanding of multi-scale terrestrial system functioning, including hydrology driven biogeochemical processes.

What You Will Do:
• Perform research and development in the field of internet of things (IoT). It will include the development of logger (microcontroller) hardware and software designed for specific environmental sensors.
• Develop data transfer and processing (including signal processing) routines and will develop calibration techniques when needed.
• Maintain and modify UAV platforms for the acquisition of optical and geophysical data.
• Participate in field campaigns including deployment of distributed sensor network and acquisition of UAV based surveys. This will require some travel during short period of time to Colorado and Alaska primarily.

Requirements

What Is Required:
• Bachelor(or higher), or equivalent in experience, in physics, electrical engineering, or computer science. Coursework in signal processing, embedded design, or operating systems is a big plus.
• Demonstrated experience in the research and development of hardware and/or software related to the acquisition of data. As such, experience with Python and C/C++ are necessary. Experience with embedded Linux systems such as Raspberry Pi and/or BeagleBone is a plus. Familiarity with a CAD software such as Eagle or SOLIDWORKS is also useful.
• Motivation to tackle challenges involved in the development of new data acquisition platforms for sensing environmental, ecological, geophysical and hydro-biogeochemical properties.
• Aptitude to bring new ideas, learn new techniques, evaluate various options and work independently and with a team to improve understanding and prediction of field scale terrestrial system behavior is required.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:
• This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
• Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
• There are two openings for this position with different start dates.
• Salary is commensurate with experience.
• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
• Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
