We have multiple openings for Environmental, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering Analysts to join an interdisciplinary team conducting analysis of carbon reduction processes and their implications for the national security, economic and environmental interests of the United States. You will apply a combination of technical expertise, critical thinking, and in-depth analysis of information from a variety of sources to provide assessments in support of national objectives. Note: candidates chosen for interviews will be asked to submit a writing sample. The position will work programmatically within Global Security (GS) Principal Directorate's E Program and will administratively report to the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Conduct complex systems engineering on achieving environmental goals related to reduction of carbon compounds in the atmosphere in a technologically and economically viable manner.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of various technical solutions to issues such as carbon capture and alternative approaches to reducing carbon emissions and evaluate the linkages between supply chains, transportation, and carbon management outcomes to create solutions that are robust to different application regimes.
  • Evaluate the carbon outcomes quantitatively for solutions and help develop robust accounting approaches for carbon solutions that consider the entire supply chain and alternative uses for the energy, materials, and resources in that chain.
  • Contribute to the development of a focused national research program in assigned areas that address key science and technology and policy questions, assist in identifying priorities, defining problems, and proposing analytic methodologies with minimal direction.
  • Identify priorities, define problems, propose complex analysis methodologies, collect and organize data, and write assessments in support of sponsor and other stakeholder objectives that adhere to system engineering analytic standards.
  • Present and explain analytic findings as verbal briefings to sponsors and other stakeholders; may include some domestic and international travel.
  • Contribute to the development of new program opportunities, including the definition and development of research proposals and interaction with potential sponsors and customers under minimal direction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

  • Represent the organization as a main point of contact on multiple highly complex environmental/chemical related tasks and large projects, working effectively with conflicting priorities.
  • Lead multidisciplinary national and international teams solving problems in carbon management, particularly in negative emissions and carbon accounting.
  • Contribute to setting LLNL priorities in carbon management, carbon removal, and climate resilience.
  • Lead and contribute to new proposals at the state, federal, and international level.
  • Coordinate relationships with industry, business, and non-governmental organizations as part of formal or informal teams.

  • M.S. in engineering (chemical, mechanical, civil or environmental), relevant scientific discipline (chemistry, physics, material science), or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
  • Significant experience conducting system-level analysis of the feasibility of implementation of technology solutions including evaluation of the supply chain and system linkages.
  • Experience in analysis of carbon management systems, energy systems or experience in chemical industrial systems.
  • Significant experience working with multidisciplinary teams to identify priorities, define problems, develop and carry out analytical approaches to gather and assess industrial data, achieve moderately complex to complex project objectives; includes strength in partnering with outside organizations successfully, under limited direction.
  • Significant experience working effectively under deadlines, reasoning effectively under broadly defined objectives and limited information, coordinating workload on multiple projects simultaneously, and meeting deadlines with conflicting priorities.
  • Substantial experience working with interdisciplinary teams across organizational work units, utilizing effective teamwork and customer service skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate in an interdisciplinary team environment, author moderately complex to complex technical analyses, and present technical information to external sponsors and customers.
  • Ability to travel off-site, including potentially internationally, for sponsor and customer interaction.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

  • Subject matter expertise experience delivering high-quality, impactful, and highly complex technical analysis.
  • Significant experience in multi-organization proposal development.
  • Significant experience in industrial chemical production.
  • Expert verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate with internal and external teams and advise senior management and external sponsors.
  • Peer reviewed publications or lead authorship of reports that deal with carbon management, carbon accounting, or systems evaluation of energy production.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ph D. in engineering (chemical, mechanical, civil or environmental), relevant scientific discipline (chemistry, physics, material science)
  • Comprehensive understanding and/or experience in the chemical industry, in one or more of the following areas: equipment or plant design, process development, quality control, quality assurance, or waste management or related technologies.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience working on techno-economic analyses or systems engineering in the environmental or chemical processing domain.

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.
