Job Description

The Robotics Branch of the Aerospace, Transportation & Advanced Systems Lab creates innovative robotics and automation solutions for both industry and Government efforts in domains ranging from space habitats to biomanufacturing and warehouse automation. ATAS conducts research for government and industry customers in industrial robotics, medical robotics, unmanned systems, aerodynamics, radar and weapons systems, food processing technology, and modeling of social systems. http://www.gtri.gatech.edu/atas

Our projects include coordinated multi-arm robot systems, work with small vehicle platforms, and automation for biomanufacturing. The Robotics Branch is looking for graduates in robotics, computer science, computer/electrical/mechanical engineering, or related fields specializing in software development, robotic planning, and control for agile robotics. 

You will be joining a growing robotics branch and division, and responsibilities may include research into new and innovative algorithms, rapid prototyping, systems integration, and software engineering with a specific focus on agile robotic applications.

The successful candidate will perform research into novel solutions and algorithms for areas ranging from manipulation for discrete part assembly to sensor processing for obstacle avoidance and localization in both industrial and Government domains.

Job Duties

  • Creating software and applications for robotics and automation systems
  • Generating research reports, publications, proposals, and briefs to customers
  • Responsibilities include algorithm development, test, and debug, along with system integration
  • Additional responsibilities may include:
    • Research into new and innovative algorithms,
    • Rapid prototyping,
    • Systems integration, and
    • Software engineering with a specific focus on agile robotic applications.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field of study.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field of study.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than May 2021
  • Strong software skills and experience with C/C++ 
  • Strong mathematical foundation and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Hand-on experience with state-of-the-art algorithms on autonomous robot manipulators and/or ground-based robotic systems.
  • Experience with micro-controllers for general automation projects

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Experience with VR/AR systems design and development
  • Experience with biological or medical robotic applications
  • Experience with machine vision
  • Experience with systems integration
  • Experience with real-time embedded software
  • Has engaged in independent projects
  • Experience with version control systems such as GIT
  • Proven research experience in at least one of these areas is desirable:
    • Robotic arms and/or grasping
    • Multirobot collaboration
    • Path planning and navigation
    • Behavior-based robotics
    • Optimal control and estimation
    • Robotic task planning

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
