The Integrated Teaching and Learning (ITL) Program and Laboratory in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) encourages applications for an Engineering Project Consultant! This position provides functional, operational, and instructional support to engineering students, staff, and faculty. This position offers professional guidance related to circuit theory, design, testing, prototyping, fabrication, and troubleshooting. They maintain and improve laboratory resources in innovative ways, and they work with faculty to continually increase the number of courses that utilize a hands-on curriculum. This position leads the development of hands-on skill-building workshops in the areas of basic circuitry, soldering, and PCB design, fabrication, and assembly. The position also collaborates on pre-college engineering education initiatives to broaden participation in engineering. 
While this position has a range of responsibilities, its primary day-to-day focus is to provide unmatched hands-on support to engineering students.  This support most often happens in on-on-one and small-group settings, but also includes teaching workshops to larger groups and entire classes.  The position can also accommodate 10-20% remote work.

The ITL Program and Laboratory is an educational unit within CEAS supporting hands-on courses and workshops in undergraduate and graduate engineering to over 6,000 students each academic year. In addition to engineering college students, the program also serves the K-12 community through its pre-college engineering education program, which includes in-class and after-school engineering design activities, summer camps, and teacher professional development workshops.

What your Key Responsibilities Will Be:
Technical Consultation and Instruction
  • Advises students and faculty in electrical and computer engineering concepts such as:
    • Circuit theory and analysis (e.g. frequency response, resonant circuits, electromagnetics).
    • Design and applications of digital logic circuits.
    • Analysis, modeling, design, and testing of analog electronic circuits.
    • Digital system design, including software and hardware building blocks and software-hardware integration.
    • The overall design and implementation of engineering systems.
  • Supports students and faculty in the detailed proposal, design, build integration, testing, and documentation of electronic and/or computer-based systems.
  • Develops and teaches hands-on skill-building workshops to undergraduate and graduate engineering students. Topics include: simple circuits and measurement fundamentals, through-hole and SMT soldering, schematic capture and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout using Eagle and Altium, PCB fabrication and assembly, and PCB rework.
  • Presents information and technical instruction in a manner that cultivates an encouraging and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff with varying levels of exposure and expertise of the content.
  • Constantly seeks innovative equipment and resources for hands-on learning to provide students with exposure to industry-standard engineering tools.
Laboratory Management
  • Owns the management and support of various hands-on electronics workstations, sophisticated circuit analysis testing equipment, PCB fabrication & assembly equipment, and soldering workstations throughout ITLP-run teaching labs. Anticipates students’ needs and maintains vital supplies of equipment and components to ensure project-based courses run efficiently.
  • Independently manages the entire lifecycle (purchasing, installation, calibration, and maintenance) for desktop electronics test equipment in multiple laboratory plazas and classrooms. Collaborates with CEAS faculty and staff when specifying new equipment.
  • Designs, installs, operates, and supports audio and visual (AV) systems in multiple hands-on teaching classrooms. The AV systems include microphones, speakers, video screens, projectors, recording equipment, connecting wires and cables, sound and mixing boards, etc.
  • Leads the ITLP as department property manager (DPM). DPM records purchases and maintains an inventory database in collaboration with the ITLP IT team, accurately disposes of old or obsolete equipment, performs a physical count of equipment and supply inventories, and prepares the ITLP for bi-annual audits in collaboration with CU Property accounting.
  • Acts as the Principal Investigator with CU Environmental Health & Safety to ensure the ITLP accurately manages hazardous waste, including PCB and electronics manufacturing chemicals.
Engineering Education Curriculum Development
  • Proactively works with multiple College of Engineering faculty members to design and build hands-on equipment and curriculum for their courses.
  • Evaluates ITLP experiments for efficiency in demonstrating fundamental concepts to students in intriguing and informative ways and make improvements as needed.
  • Periodically interviews users to assess the quality of the experiments and the learning experience, which includes developing and analyzing student and faculty surveys.
Pre-College Engineering Education Support
  • Collaborates with ITL Program partners such as the CU Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement (ODECE), I Have a Dream Foundation, TeachEngineering (an ITLP-led program), the NSF-funded ASPIRE Engineering Research Center, and others to develop and facilitate technical workshops for teachers, pre-college campus visits, outreach activities, summer camps, and other opportunities as identified by the ITLP leadership team.
  • Reviews multiple TeachEngineering curriculum submissions per year to further integrate the ITL Program’s pre-college initiatives with the Engineering Education Operation Team.
  • Serves as an engineering role model for pre-college students and visitors, making a positive impression and promoting interest in engineering and technology careers.


What we Require:

  • Laboratory Instruction Professional II: Bachelors' degree in engineering with major coursework in electrical and/or computer engineering and two years of experience or a Master's degree in engineering.
  • Laboratory Instruction Professional III: Master's degree in engineering and two years of experience or Bachelor's degree in engineering with major coursework in electrical and/or computer engineering and 4 years of experience.

Experience should be either professional electrical engineering experience or experience teaching electrical engineering skills and content.

What you will need:

  • Comprehensive understanding of the theories and concepts in primary electrical and computer engineering major courses: circuit analysis, signal analysis, control systems, high-level and/or assembly languages, computer systems architecture, etc. 
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of electronic circuits and of motors, drives, servos, sensors, batteries, and other components. 
  • Hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical systems, circuitry, wiring, soldering, crimping, use of power supplies, oscilloscopes, and other crucial laboratory equipment. 
  • Proficiency using Altium Designer, Eagle, or similar Electronic Design Automation Software Packages. 
  • Hands-on experience designing, fabricating, and assembling PCBs. 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, service-focused environment where quick decision-making and multitasking are demonstrated daily.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. 
  • Sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural, political, and geographical differences, with the ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students from around the world.

What we would like you to have:

  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related field plus two years of professional engineering experience, preferably in electrical engineering. Or a Bachelor's degree and four years of engineering experience. Teaching experience may substitute for professional experience. 
  • Experience managing equipment (electronics testing equipment, A/V, fabrication, and prototyping equipment, etc.).
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
