Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.  We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

Fermilab’s Accelerator Division is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Physicist to join the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) Facility Department.

You Will 

  • Operate facilities or moderately complex equipment to perform data collection and tests.
  • Design and develop equipment or sub-systems.
  • Interact with other specialists to coordinate the repair of the system and to propose new, improved or upgraded systems.
  • Develop plans to monitor the operation and maintenance of equipment used in advanced physics measurements or detector development at the sub-system level.
  • Monitor tests and examine operations of facilities to insure functioning and conformance with safety specifications and regulations.
  • Evaluate findings to develop improvements to existing sub-systems and new approaches to form the basis for future sub-systems.
  • Analyze the collected data and present results to supervisor, other scientists, engineers, and engineering physicists and may present results at internal group meetings.
  • Detect irregularities of a system through a complete understanding of a system and its subsystems.
  • Assist in isolating and defining problems with proper functioning of equipment.
  • Determine and monitor the safety, efficiency and operating envelope for the system or sub-system.
  • Commissions the equipment, evaluates the performance of the equipment, and may modify the equipment for use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Engineering, Math or equivalent
  • 0-3 years’ relevant work experience (Candidates with less than 3 years should demonstrate experience from a co-op, internship or undergraduate research involvement.)
  • Experience or knowledge with the following:
    • Design and installation of electrical service
    • Power supply design (magnets and/or high power RF)
    • Digital Signal Processing
    • Embedded programming
    • Analog circuit design
    • Circuit board layout/design
    • Accelerator Operations
    • Project Management
