Job Summary:
The Raytheon Missiles and Defense (RMD), Tucson, AZ, facility is searching for an Engineering Fellow who will lead high temperature materials design, development, and implementation in hypersonic systems. The successful candidate will have:
  • Advanced experience in high temperature materials spanning the technologies of Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC), Carbon/Carbon (C/C), SiC (Si/C) ceramics, RF apertures, refractory metals, ablative coatings, and high temperature alloys.
  • Knowledge in heat management and rapid heat transfer techniques.
  • Expertise or knowledge in related manufacturing technologies, integration, and environmental testing.
  • High temperature test methods such as arc-jet.
  • Knowledge and experience in metal and composite fabrication techniques.
  • Experience with Root Cause / Corrective Action resolution.

Deliverables will include test documentation, data analysis, anomaly resolution, results documentation, and presentation of results to both internal and external customers. You will work in integrated product teams to incorporate high temperature materials into deliverable products and aid in the assessment of system performance. You will define design verification test requirements to ensure that key performance characteristics and potential environmental interaction effects are quantified within program cost and schedule constraints.

Responsibilities to Anticipate:
  • Engineering Fellow in hypersonic applications and high temperature materials will serve as a strategic leader who will define where a program or product line is heading or needs to go, while considering the technical and programmatic aspects of how to get there. The Fellow must then drive the execution of that strategy across multiple programs.
  • You will be viewed as an expert and serve as a subject matter expert to the organization in determining and developing required technologies to achieve organization growth objectives in hypersonic applications.
  • Technical lead in a team environment on diverse projects, providing independently determined solutions to create high fidelity simulations and models for missile system design, performance assessment, flight test support, trade studies and analysis.
  • Provides mentorship and shoulder-to-shoulder empirical experience for engineers.
  • Works independently or through leadership of teams to solve the hardest high temperature materials challenges.
  • Strong advocate for technical integrity of hypersonic material disciplines such as
    • High temperature metals, composites, and coatings, and their fabrication processes.
    • Advanced experience in high temperature materials spanning the technologies of Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC), Carbon/Carbon (C/C), SiC (Si/C) ceramics, RF apertures, refractory metals, ablative coatings, and high temperature alloys.
    • Environmental barrier and oxidation resistant coatings, component integration and materials modeling.
    • Knowledge in heat management and rapid heat transfer techniques.
    • Expertise or knowledge in related manufacturing technologies, integration, and environmental testing.
    • High temperature test methods such as arc-jet.
  • Experience with Root Cause / Corrective Action resolution.
An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for 2 additional years of experience.

Qualifications You Must Have:
  • Bachelors in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) (Engineering disciplines, material science, chemistry, or related disciplines).
  • Twelve (12) years of experience designing and performing analysis of high temperature materials, using tools for analysis of data sets.
  • Materials and processes experience with design and/or development of thermal protection systems in vehicle bodies, such as in hypersonic applications
  • Experience with metal and / or composite fabrication and/or processing methodologies
  • Author of intellectual property (patent disclosures) or conference/journal publications in a modeling, simulation, or analysis technical area within the past ten (10) years.
  • Experience with providing engineering support for programs through participation in project design reviews and/or peer reviews, including preparing/delivering technical briefings to internal leadership and external customers.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Value:
  • Advanced degree in aforementioned disciplines. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
  • Recognized technical authority in high temperature materials technologies including high temperature composites such as Carbon / Carbon composites in airframe structures, high temperature metal and / or metal additive manufactured structures, and thermal protection systems (charring / ablation systems)
  • High level of analytical ability to drive technical solutions.
  • Well-known with established relationships in industry.
  • Proven knowledge of fundamental concepts, with high level of analytical ability to drive technical solutions.
  • Experience in Integrated Computational Materials Engineer (ICME) and materials response modeling.
  • Ability to actively participate in definition of team objectives and provide solutions to complex technical tasks.
  • A strategic leader who does not operate in a silo but can think about where a program or product line is heading or needs to go, while considering the technical aspects of how to get us there.
  • Mentor, champion of respect, diversity, and ethics.
  • Business development experience including technical and cost proposal preparation.
  • Familiarity with defense product lifecycles.
  • Current Secret or Top Secret Department of Defense Clearance.
