We have an opening for either an Engineering Design Associate or Senior Engineering Design Associate. You will work independently by collaborating with scientists, engineers and top-level technical personnel to provide advanced technical and management expertise in mechanical engineering to support the NIF & PS (National Ignition Facility & Photon Science) groups. Conducting research to find solutions to engineering problems may be required along with providing leadership in developing, designing, documenting, and analyzing mechanical systems on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and Diode Alkaline Pumped Laser (DPAL) project. Planning and leading multiple projects of significant complexity is part of this scope. Authoring, reviewing, and approving reports, manuals, and other engineering documentation is expected, as well as routinely presenting this material to superiors and subordinates. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 334.1 or 339.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Generate and drive original design solutions that address requirements and constraints while supporting solutions with advanced analytic skills, independently, under general supervision. Translate these solutions into detailed complex to highly layouts and assemblies directed or developed by you.
- Develop supporting documentation for design solutions that may include input on analysis, schedules, costing, and procedures.
- Capture design solutions via Creo Parametric and safety notes.
- Maintain documentation in the Windchill/ELM (Enterprise Lifecycle Management) configuration management (CM) system.
- Provide technical mentorship to fellow LSEO designers and lead workforce needs, schedule, job scope, and work assignments.
- Provide advanced level application and engineering development using industry best and newest practices on complex to highly complex problems and tasks.
- Participate in formal design review process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition, at the 339.2 level
- Lead technical personal team, assigning tasks, defining approaches and overseeing work; may have supervisory authority, responsible for training requirements.
- Plan, organize, budget, and lead multiple projects of significant scope.
- Mentor subordinate with specific on-the-job training, with advanced technical skills specific to assignment

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Significant applied experience with Creo Parametric.
- Experience working in Windchill Product Lifecycle Management software and/or CM system.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience analyzing structural and flow conditions with both hand calculations and finite element analysis.
- Ability to develop, analyze and interpret complex to highly complex design requirements, and use creativity, independent discretion and judgment to provide original solutions to design problems requiring advanced engineering knowledge.
- Ability to make independent technical decisions that have significant consequences to broad segments of NIF and DPAL.
- Organize both individual activities, and those of others, with multiple components requiring attention to detail, accuracy, and independent follow-through.
- Possess advanced written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills necessary to interact effectively with multi-disciplinary teams in various roles.

In addition, at the 339.2 level
- Leadership experience, developing staffing plans, performance reviews, promotional recommendations, and disciplinary actions.
- Extensive experience with planning, organizing, budgeting, and leading multiple projects of significant scope.
- Highly advanced technical knowledge and experience in multiple specific related engineering disciplines.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with project management methods and tools.
- Experience with GLOVIA, LoCoS, and other NIF IT software.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
