We have multiple openings for highly qualified and motivated scientists and engineers to join us to solve critical climate change problems. We have openings for Energy Technology and System Analysis Postdoctoral Research Staff Members. You will work with a diverse group of scientists and engineers supporting LLNL's Carbon Initiative within the Global Security Directorate's Energy and Homeland Security Program. You will analyze and assess the impact of innovative and complex energy technologies and systems associated with achieving greater efficiency, optimization and sustainability. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will:

  • Research, design and optimize efficient energy technologies and systems from initial concept and design to scale up and demonstration.
  • Perform life cycle assessments to compare the environmental impacts of innovative energy technologies and/or energy systems and optimize the system parameters to improve the carbon footprint over current state-of-the-art.
  • Apply engineering knowledge to evaluate a broad range of technology performance and costs tradeoffs of early-stage energy technologies.
  • Design computational tools to optimize the logistic network of biomass resource supply and product distribution at regional and national scales.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of original research to address defined problems.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at conferences, seminars, and meetings.
  • Travel as required to coordinate research with collaborators and visit field sites.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in an energy focused field such as Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Environmental or Physical Science, or related field.
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more key areas: energy systems, lifecycle assessment, technoeconomic analysis, geospatial analysis, analytic computational modeling and simulation, and/or energy policy analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original research and communicate findings in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and project managers to develop and apply these capabilities to inform engineering decisions.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Hands on engineering experience with pilot, demonstration or commercialization scale engineering projects.
  • Experience in technology commercialization.
  • Knowledge and experience in carbon accounting and environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience in carbon utilization.
