Job Description

GTRIs Co-operative Education (co-op) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state-of-the-art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school.

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) is currently seeking students to work in the Test Engineering Division (TEN) for the Fall of 2021.

Test Engineering Division (TEN) provides Test and Evaluation (T&E) capability for Electronic Warfare (EW), Avionics, and Radar Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) test systems. These systems provide high fidelity simulation and stimulation of real-time Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR), Radio Frequency (RF), and Avionics environments for testing EW, Avionics, and Radar systems that are used to protect aircraft from ground and airborne threats.

This broad range of research will provide a solid foundation for the student as a future software engineer. The student will work under the guidance of GTRI researchers performing research in one of the following areas -

Developing advanced capabilities within test and evaluation
Sensing and digital signal processing across broad bands of the electromagnetic spectrum
Developing embedded software and firmware for high-speed processing, including FPGA
Integrating control of embedded hardware systems
Creating a complex electromagnetic environment used to test Aircraft Protection systems

The student researcher will perform one or more of the following activities -

Data capture and analysis of RF analog and digital signals
Embedded software and firmware development of hardware integrated components, ie. serial controllers, discrete controllers, communication busses
Firmware and Software development for low latency, high bandwidth applications
Circuit board design for custom, time-critical systems

Required Minimum Qualifications


  • Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must be eligible to be approved by your college/university to participate in a co-op program and register for co-op credit with your university during work terms. The first work term will start in August 2021.
  • Must be able to complete at least three full-time co-op terms (alternating three terms of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school) prior to graduation


  • Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related field
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must commit to a single semester full-time internship.  The work term is August 2021-December 2021

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to perform research independently
  • Ability to prioritize tasks while working on multiple projects
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Experience in 1 or more programming languages (Example C#, Python)
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
