We have an opening for a Program Element Leader for Advanced Photon Technologies (APT) High Energy Density (HED) high intensity science. You will be responsible for supporting ongoing and future projects to extend LLNLs leadership in the research & development of applications of advanced photon sources in support of NNSA and DOE missions. This position is in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Principal Directorate (NIF&PS PAD) and reports to the NIF Director

Essential Duties
- Provide leadership and technical expertise in defining and executing near- and long-term strategic plans and goals for successful development of HED science with modern high intensity lasers.
- Manage the scope, schedule and budget of APT's program element HED high intensity science.
- Manage and lead the scientific team in pursuit of program goals.
- Cultivate relationships with strategic academic, national laboratory, industry and international partners that will facilitate the advancement of HED high intensity science in the NNSA mission space and the U.S.
- Facilitate recruiting, hiring and staff development.
- Work closely with APT's program element for Advanced Laser Technology development to coordinate the vision and plan for laser development in NIF&PS.
- Build and maintain a strategic roadmap and implementation plan aligned with NIF&PS strategic vision for enabling HED technologies.
- Serve as a senior member of the NIF management team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Ph.D. in science, engineering or related technical field or equivalent level of education and related experience.
- Recognized leader in the international HED physics community with significant experience applying scientific creativity and achievement, including advanced leadership skills in executing experiments on large HED laser facilities, initiating new ideas, building support in the community, and organizing and delivering results to stakeholders.
- Significant knowledge and technical expertise in high-intensity laser matter interaction, high energy density plasma physics research.
- Highly advanced ability to establish and manage multidisciplinary programmatic research portfolios with an understanding of budgetary processes.
- Expert leadership and management skills to champion innovative direction and influence the development of institutional goals and objectives with the ability to collaborate effectively at high levels within internal and external organizations and constituencies.
- Extensive experience building positive working relationships with a broad cross-section of management, the U.S. government and their agencies, and technical and administrative personnel with the ability to delegate effectively and lead, motivate, and build complex interdisciplinary teams.
- Expert communication, facilitation, collaboration, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills necessary to direct an organization, lead innovative research, build cooperative multi-disciplinary teams, and interact with management and customers/sponsors.
- Ability to travel to national and international programmatic and scientific meetings.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of Laboratory programs, policies, and procedures.
- Experience managing financial activities according to organization-specific LLNL and DOE fiscal policies and practices.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
