Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing Electronic Engineering activities for the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences by engaging in electronic design, implementation, and maintenance of electronic instrumentation, computer interfaces, and associated apparatuses used in scientific research applications. Supplies engineering support and expertise to departmental faculty, staff, students, and the Technical Support Group (TSG) personnel as needed.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology and two years of experience.

Understanding of applied electronic engineering solutions via analog and digital circuitry used for audio, video, transducers, sensors, and others. Understanding of Operating Systems (OS) for the control and data collection. Knowledge of electronic formulas for passive and active components, analog and digital design principles, including use of embedded microcontrollers (uC) and arduinos in designs, computer number systems, and theory. Knowledge of computer aided design (CAD) systems for schematic drawing, printed circuit board (PCB) layout, materials list generation and acquisition. Ability to interpret schematic drawings, circuit debugging, troubleshooting, and implementation of engineering modifications. Ability to write uC code and other high level language programming skills in C, C++, Visual C++, Python, or Basic in order to use Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Knowledge of how the 3 Tesla (3T) magnetic fields affect ferrous metals, paramagnetic elements, and non-ferrous materials electrically. Ability to design with fiber optics, near Infra-Red (IR) photo emitters, detectors, and high gain low noise operational amplifiers circuitry. Technical writing skills to fully document designed apparatus and systems. Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Photoshop.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate level training including a master’s degree or Ph.D. Experience in a custom job environment where “need designs” are a common occurrence. Experience using at least one programming language, specifically C or C++. Experience with mechanical component design and fabrication using machine tools. Experience with other relevant fabrication technologies including 3D printing.

Working Conditions / Demands

Ability to perform implementation tasks related to system prototyping that would include soldering along with machine tool usage. Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time. Utilize PCs, Mac computers and iPads, notebook and laptop computers, and diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and DVM.
