Job Description

The electronic systems architect in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) Division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) will support the design and development of cutting-edge, complex electronic systems that define next-generation capabilities for our sponsors. The position requires technical expertise to generate robust system design artifacts and interface with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and sponsors to design and develop electronic systems. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Develop system architectures/requirements and translate them into clear engineering/design artifacts
  • Build system solutions based on requirements and required integrations with novel/existing applications, systems, or platforms
  • Identify, select, and test candidate technologies, approaches, and architectures to ensure robust solutions
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems to include keeping up-to-date on industry standards and road maps for current and future technology updates
  • Collaborate with sponsors and project teams to ensure project deliverables and requirements are met
  • Develop technical papers for conferences and develop/present briefings to potential sponsors
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field-.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience developing robust system architectures
  • Experience developing and/or integrating electronics systems
  • Experience with requirements development and traceability through all system development phases
  • 5+ years of applicable work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Secret Clearance
  • Experience leading engineering teams and/or projects
  • Experience with avionics or other electronic systems used in Department of Defense (DOD) systems
  • Experience with the Electronic Warfare domain and basic concepts
  • Experience leading and facilitating Agile project execution
  • Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders
  • Experience as a systems architect on production/fielded systems

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
