Berkeley Lab is seeking an experienced Electrical Safety Professional with occupational safety experience to join the Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Division. In this role, you will develop and maintain the LBNL electrical safety program and support implementation throughout the various scientific and operational organizations within Berkeley Lab. This is a great opportunity to serve the Lab community by consulting on a variety of complex electrical safety and occupational health challenges associated with the Lab’s ongoing major capital projects, maintenance, and other scientific research programs.  


What You Will Do:

• Provide technical consultation for electrical safety issues and provide recommendations to resolve a variety of complex occupational health and safety problems, including analyzing and evaluating work activities for compliance with electrical safety requirements and ensuring that the electrical, health and safety programs are effectively implemented throughout the Laboratory.

• Develop, implement and maintain the Laboratory’s Electrical Safety program, including policies, plans, procedures, hazard analyses, permits, training materials, audits, communications, and program files and records.

• Serve as Electrical Safety Officer and principal expert on the LBNL Electrical Safety Committee.

• Coordinate the Electrical Equipment Inspection Program, including maintaining a close partnership with the Engineering Division which administers the program. Provide leadership to equipment inspectors and ensure the equipment inspection database is maintained. 

• Serve as the EHS technical advisor to scientific and operations divisions in the area of electrical safety.  Develop and maintain a collaborative working relationship with EHS staff, line management and employees regarding electrical and occupational health and safety issues.  

• Conduct hazard evaluations and risk assessments using approved National Fire Protection Administration 70E, “Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace”, and Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) methodologies.

• Participate in and/or lead the investigation of electrical or other safety accidents or near miss events.

• Conduct frequent field inspections and safety program audits/assessments.  

• Deliver training in support of EHS programs to enable successful learning and development across complex and diverse organizations.

• Interface with the Department of Energy Bay Area Site Office in support of their oversight activities, Division Safety Coordinators and Division management. 


What is Required:

• B.S. and 15 years of experience; M.S. and 10 years of experience; Ph.D. and 7 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in occupational health and safety with a concentration in electrical safety.  

• Nationally recognized, professional licenses and certifications relevant to electrical safety (i.e., CESCP).

• Medium voltage and High voltage experience and the ability to become qualified as an LBNL QEW3.   

• Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and maintain moderate to large and complex electrical safety programs and initiatives, including developing and executing training, writing procedures, and conducting audits and safety inspections. 

• Expert working knowledge of and demonstrated ability applying OSHA, DOE, National Fire Protection Administration, and IEEE electrical safety requirements. 

• Excellent interpersonal and project management skills in leading an interdisciplinary EHS team, developing and presenting complex briefings and technical reports, and providing technical consultation to both technical and lay audiences.

• Skilled in time management, balancing workloads, and performing effectively under challenging conditions such as fluctuating priorities, changing assignments, constrained budgets and resources.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and effectively both verbally and in writing with internal contacts, external stakeholders and/or regulatory agencies as well as members of the public as applicable.

• Advanced expertise using MS Office for technical documents, presentations and instructional materials.

• Ability to physically inspect all Laboratory work areas, including shops, construction sites, laboratories, office areas, and outside areas. Ability to climb stairs, ladders, lift 10to 20 lbs, and wear respiratory protection equipment.


Additional Desired Skills:

• Comprehensive knowledge of Environment, Health and Safety principles and practices.

• Occupational health or safety professional certifications preferred (i.e., CIH or CSP).

• Advanced experience designing instructional materials for classroom and/or online. Skills and experience providing train-the-trainer instruction.

• Academic training or job experience working in a scientific or technical environment.



• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
