Job Summary: Electrical, Instrument, and Control Engineer supports and/or leads projects, develops standards, and provides technical support to Manufacturing, Engineering, Maintenance, Process Development, and Information Systems.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Project Management – Manage Electrical and control related capital projects and upgrades, from cost estimates and design, to installation and proof testing.  Participate on project teams providing electrical support as needed.
  2. PLC Programming – Responsibilities include maintenance and development of PLC Systems and sub systems. Provide PLC (Allen-Bradley and/or Opto22) programming support for new automation projects and existing automated systems. Provide programming support for existing automated systems. Work includes Logic Programming, I/O addressing, HMI design, ladder logic and related documentation. Modify graphics as requested, to optimize process information.
  3. PLC Database Administration – Monitor control system data and resolve errors and data handling issues. Extract process data, as needed for process troubleshooting issues or upgrade projects.  Collaborate with the IS Department to ensure accurate data transfer between the control system data collection/historian and the ERP system.
  4. Instrument/Equipment Specification and Purchasing – Size and Specify Instruments (Level, Pressure, Temperature, and Flow) and Electrical Equipment. Generate Instrument Specification Sheets, work with vendors, and follow through the Purchasing Process.
  5. Power Distribution and Electrical Controls Design – Familiar with Primary Distribution Systems (8320V and below) through main utility transformers and switchgear. Design for Motor Control Centers and field wiring for equipment (480 Volts and below). Provide detailed design for equipment and instruments.
  6. Documentation Control – Produce and maintain a variety of records at all levels of project and daily workflow. Help with Project Development, Bid Packages, As-Builts, Engineering Changes, Work Orders, and other tasks. Coordinate information between P&IDs, PLC Programming, and ERP/MRP Databases. Drawings may include Loop Sheets, traditional Hardwire Diagrams, One-Line Drawings, and Instrument/Conduit/Wire Layout Drawings. Update all EI&C documentation as required. Familiar with AutoCad and common PC applications related to office and system administration.
  7. Electrical Safety – Familiar with NFPA 70 Area Classifications (Class I Div 1 and Class II Div 2), Explosion Proof and Intrinsically Safe Practices, Arc Flash, and Combustible Dust.  Possess an ability to resolve electrical code questions.
  8. Troubleshooting – Assist Maintenance and Production with electrical, instrumentation, and control issues. Knowledgeable of ladder logic, chart logic, and symptom diagnosis methods.  Provide off-hour troubleshooting assistance as needed for process control systems.
  9. Problem Solver – Interface with other departments, such as Information Services, Maintenance, Production, Safety, etc. in both project and daily tasks. Resolve technical issues with practical, robust, and cost-effective solutions. Sift through conflicting information to arrive at logical conclusions.
  10. Other Attributes – Independent, goal-oriented, team player, interested in learning and staying current with automation/controls technology.  Detail-oriented with ability to work efficiently.  Strong time management and organizational skills; capable of simultaneously managing multiple assignments.

Requirements

Education/Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science or engineering or related degree (Electrical Engineering preferred)
  • 5+ Years of experience in Process Control, PLC Programming and Troubleshooting
  • 3+ Years of Process Industry Experience
  • Experience and fluency with PLC Programming (Allen-Bradley RSLogix 500/5000 and/or Opto22 PAC); willingness and desire to learn all site control systems.

 Desired:

  • 5-10 years prior working experience in Food/Chemical/Pharmaceutical Plant
  • Experience with Rockwell FactoryTalk Batch, FactoryTalk View SE, HMI Software, and/or ISA88 Batch Control
  • Experience with SIS design to ANSI/ISA-61511 and/or entity evaluation based on ANSI/ISA-RP 12.06.01-2003 for intrinsically safe (I.S.) systems a plus
  • Electrical Power Distribution design experience
