Electrical Engineer

The Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking an Electrical Engineer. This individual is responsible for the analysis, design and development of the electrical, instrumentation, and control aspects of unique thermal power plants and other energy conversion systems. Work in this area includes circuit card assemblies, electrical power generation and distribution, embedded systems, software development and testing, control algorithm development and implementation, instrumentation, and data acquisition. Additionally, this individual is responsible to manage the procurement of parts and equipment, be the technical point of contact with vendors, and to assure the quality of delivered parts. This position is also responsible to assist with component and subsystem test planning, test execution and test documentation, at the direction of a team lead engineer.

Preferred experience in/with:

  • Circuit card layout and fabrication
  • Data acquisition
  • Instrumentation and sensors
  • Electric machine control and power distribution

    Required experience / skills include:
  • Circuit design and development
  • Troubleshooting electronic circuits and systems
  • Proficiency with programming languages
  • Control algorithm development and instrumentation
  • Strong communication skills, including technical writing

    Education: Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and 2 years' experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Engineering Science and Mechanics is preferred.
    Candidates will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

    These are one year, fixed-term renewable appointments.
