Areté Associates, an employee-owned company, is a growing research and development firm recognized for contributing to national security objectives by supplying innovative solutions to challenging technical problems faced by the United States. Our Arlington, VA office has an immediate opening for an Electrical Engineer reporting to the Principal Electrical Engineer.  This is an exempt non-supervisory full-time position.

SUMMARY:

The candidate will join a successful, innovative and entrepreneurial team of engineers and scientists designing and developing technology for harsh (primarily ocean) environments. Many of our sensors work at low frequencies (<1kHz) and require low-power and low-noise design techniques, producing small quantities of extremely capable instrumentation. This team is passionate about cradle-to-grave design: the candidate will be involved in and responsible for requirements development all the way to field testing. Our most successful candidates have multidisciplinary interests and skillsets: they design and lay out analog and digital circuitry, understand packaging and thermal constraints, write and modify firmware and software, and understand the scientific requirements for the system. The candidate’s day-to-day work involves system and circuit level design of these analog and digital electronics systems, working closely with the mechanical design team to protect it from pressure and seawater, and coordinating with the science team to define requirements and understand and process the acquired data. The successful applicant will have experience designing and bringing up multiple circuit boards.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working independently or in a multi-disciplinary team, develop potential concepts to solve a problem, beginning by analyzing system requirements to derive engineering specifications.
  • Design analog and digital circuits for new sensing methodologies using low-power and low-noise design techniques.
  • Design system components at the PCB level and work with manufacturer to have it fabricated and assembled.
  • Modify firmware, debug the board and system, test and calibrate components.
  • Integrate the sensor or system into a larger system, often offsite and with other organizations
  • Act as the system expert on field tests, taking the complete system to a realistic environment, and analyze results of field tests to improve system performance and robustness
  • Work with technicians or contractors to build and rework components.
  • Travel typically 10-20%, with opportunities for extended field tests every 1-2 years

 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering or related field with 5-10 years of experience
  • Must have experience independently designing, modifying and debugging analog and digital electronics for complex systems, including schematic design, layout, build and test
  • Excited to work in a lab or field environment, soldering and modifying your own designs using typical electronics lab equipment
  • Able to work in a team with minimal supervision and agility to work multiple differing projects simultaneously
  • Proven capability to develop creative solutions to complex technical problems
  • Ability to communicate clearly both written and verbally
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience designing with and programming 8-, 16- or 32-bit microcontrollers or FPGA platforms
  • Experienced with Altium Designer, MSP430, C2000, HC08 microprocessors
  • FPGA, digital design, high speed/RF, robotics experience a plus
  • Software programming skills in Python, C/C++, MATLAB is a plus
  • Active security clearance
