We have an opening for an Electrical Engineer. You will be responsible for the design, development, testing, and fielding and ongoing operational support of high-speed x-ray radiation detector and camera systems in the Target Diagnostics Detector Systems group, within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate (NIF&PS) Directorate. Technology areas include advanced focal plane arrays, x-ray streak cameras, high-speed microchannel plate gated imagers, radiation detection, Active Pixel Sensors (APS aka CMOS image sensor) and CCD optical sensors, high-speed transient digitizers, and radiation effects on electrical components and systems. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Execute system-level project work scope with a well-defined electrical system level design, testing, and integration under general direction.
- Provide solutions and analysis of various camera systems, sensor integration, and data transmission involving limited complexity.
- Contribute to design efforts of electronic systems and components, for testing at various radiation generation facilities or labs.
- Provide engineering solutions for existing and future diagnostic systems, including quality standards, publications and presentations, and participation in multidisciplinary design efforts.
- Provide day-to-day engineering support for diagnostic systems currently deployed in the NIF.
- Contribute to project/program milestone completion and provide solutions to problem of limited complexity using well defined techniques and methodologies.
- Collaborate with other engineers functioning as a team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.2 Level
- Provide guidance and informal mentorship to small engineering teams to successfully execute project deliverables including managing schedules and small project budgets and facilitating successful installation and commissioning of new diagnostic systems within NIF.
- Participate in or provide technical guidance of formal and informal moderately complex to complex engineering design reviews that may involve regulators, sensors, RF, and/or board level high speed signal systems.
- Execute moderately complex to complex short term (1-3 day) electrical component and system level tests and simulations at specialized partner organizations test facilities.

Qualifications
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Fundamental knowledge of analog circuit design and digital circuit design at the component level. Experience with hands on testing and debugging of electronic hardware.
- Experience with printed circuit board (PCB) layout or design that are well defined.
- Experience working with ADC, DACs, op-amps, and other standard board components that are well defined.
- Fundamental knowledge of microcontrollers, embedded systems, vacuum electronics, device electronics, high voltage pulsed electronics, RF systems, or semiconductor fabrication and testing.
- Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multidisciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, document analyses, and deliver scientific presentations.

In Addition, at the SES.2 Level
- PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Broad experience working with and comprehensive knowledge of (ADC), (DACs), op-amps, linear and switching voltage regulators, pressure/temperature sensors, board level high speed signals.
- Broad experience working with or designing and comprehensive knowledge of high speed digital or analogue data transmission systems.
- Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience with high bandwidth RF system design.
- Experience with Particle in Cell (PiC) or similar Electromagnetic particle simulation software tools.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain moderately complex to complex technical information.
- Experience providing guidance and informal mentorship including managing schedules (gant charts) and small project budgets.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with semiconductor fabrication facilities.
- Knowledge of small-scale lab automation (oscilloscopes, digital delay generators, power supplies, motor controllers, data acquisition systems, or similar) to accelerate the collection of test data.
- Experience with small scale system level production
- Experience using and expanding existing MATLAB, Python, SPICE, or LabVIEW, scripts/routines for analysis and lab automation.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
