We have an opening for an Electrical/Computer Engineer. You will participate in new and ongoing projects in the area of National Defense, with technical responsibility for a range of duties including design, fabrication, and testing of both analog and digital electrical systems, as well as embedded systems. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED)/Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program supporting the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Develop designs and provide engineering solutions for embedded systems (microcontroller and FPGA).
  • Develop automated test scripts and systems.
  • Test, troubleshoot, analyze, and qualify embedded systems, software, firmware, as well as general circuit designs.
  • Contribute to the detailed design process, component part fabrication, and unit assembly.
  • Generate detailed plans, schedules, and budgets for project activities.
  • Learn and support NNSA, institutional, and other quality assurance requirements and processes for state-of-health surveillance of the nuclear stockpile.
  • Prepare supporting safety and engineering documentation and participate in engineering design reviews.
  • Interface with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to complete various LLNL projects.
  • Work independently and with teams to solve moderately complex problems that require analysis and creative use of established techniques and methods.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level

  • Provide advanced conceptual solutions to a diverse range of moderate to complex issues/problems that require analysis and creative use of established techniques and methods.
  • Provide guidance, technical direction, and solutions in the design, production, and testing of electrical and electro-optical systems.
  • Provide engineering solutions to a variety of projects in one or more of the following technical areas: analog and digital circuit design, process control systems, pulsed power and electromagnetics, diagnostics and sensor development, electro-optic systems, data acquisition systems and tester development.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering concepts related to design, assembly, calibration, and testing of analog and digital electrical systems. Knowledge of digital logic design using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) in VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL).
  • Knowledge and experience with implementing and testing microcontrollers coded in C. Knowledge and experience with automated test scripts, troubleshooting software/firmware, and testing hardware.
  • Experience or accredited certification in both quality control and quality assurance.
  • Familiar with Software Quality Assurance (SQA) and development lifecycles.
  • Knowledge of analog design. Knowledge of SPICE or similar circuit simulation software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multidisciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, document analyses, and deliver scientific presentations.
  • Ability to travel.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical engineering concepts related to design, assembly, calibration, and testing of analog and digital electrical systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of SPICE or similar circuit simulation software.
  • Significant experience in conducting experiments of complex electrical and electro-optics systems and the advanced application of timing and data acquisition systems.
  • Advanced communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner, both verbal and written for presentation and interaction with other technical staff members.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience with the Microchip family of microcontrollers, LabView and NI TestStand.
  • Knowledge and experience with Python programming.
  • Experience with sensor integration, calibration, and signal analysis techniques.
