The Instructional Products group seeks an experienced, flexible editor to help develop and polish innovative end-user materials delivered in a wide range of formats, from traditional to cutting edge.

Key Qualifications

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills; attention to detail; and command of grammar and punctuation
  • The ability to synthesize and simplify complex topics and procedures, especially by suggesting alternative ways to present information
  • Familiarity with standard publication style guides, including The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Outstanding teamwork skills and flexibility in decision making, including the ability to compromise gracefully
  • Patience and the ability to work collaboratively with writers of all experience levels
  • Knowledge of trademark and copyright issues a plus

Description

The editor:
Works with instructional designers to help create engaging, clear, and error-free instructional materials, including onscreen quick tours, EPUB user guides, and HTML help systems
Performs developmental edits and rewrites as necessary to improve a document's overall structure, approach, and tone
Copyedits and proofreads documents for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and style
Adapts instructional approach, voice, and tone for specific deliverables and audiences
Reviews documents at all stages of the product development cycle
Raises editorial issues as needed, and helps develop editorial guidelines and style sheets
Advocates for customers and collaborates closely with product teams to influence product interfaces
Participates in evolving the overall instructional design strategy for Apple products
With the other editors, gives presentations to the department on issues relevant to writing, and runs workshops to help writers hone their skills
Collaborates as needed with other team members, including graphic designers, engineers, project managers, and marketers

Education & Experience
B.A. or graduate degree in English, Instructional Design, Information Technology, or a related discipline
Minimum of four years' editing experience, preferably with print or electronic instructional materials for complex hardware and software products
Interface design, human factors, or usability-testing experience a plus
