Project/Unit Description

The Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) seeks qualified individuals for the position of Chief, Signals and Systems Division (SASD). The SASD Division Chief is responsible for oversight of all Division activities, including management and allocation of Division overhead budgets and resources; execution of projects assigned to staff within the Division; coordination of sponsor engagement and proposal generation; hiring, mentoring, and professional development of staff within the Division; and conducting program development aligned with the Divisions technical competencies. The Division Chief will work closely with Laboratory and Institute Leadership in defining, communicating, and executing strategic plans that support both the Divisions goals and the overall Institute strategic vision.

The SASD consists of a staff of 30 research professionals engaged in a portfolio of research related to next-generation aerospace technology analysis and innovation, including RF/EO/IR sensor physics, signal processing algorithms and techniques, EM maneuver warfare, effects-based modeling and simulation, verification and validation, advanced threat analysis, and operations research/developmental planning. ACL develops tailored solutions for a broad range of national security challenges through disciplined application of physics- and effects-based modeling to realizable systems, augmented with prototype development and testing. ACLs research thrusts extend across domains, and include bio-, chemical-, RF-, and optical-sensor physics; materials science and engineering; electromagnetic theory, computation, structures, and measurements; electronic warfare techniques and applications; operational scenario modeling and simulation; traditional and asymmetric threat analysis; and ground maneuver warfare.

Job Purpose

The Division Chief is the principal leader and manager of all Division activities, while also maintaining a research role including contributions to sponsored research projects. The Division Chief sets the vision and strategy for the Division, provides oversight and direction for research projects in the Division, manages the personnel in the Division, and maintains ultimate responsibility for all of the financial and administrative operations of the Division. The Division Chief acts as the liaison between the Division and Lab Leadership, other Divisions, and the rest of GTRI.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership of the Division in the thrust areas of RF/EO/IR sensor physics, signal processing algorithms and techniques, EM maneuver warfare, effects-based modeling and simulation, verification and validation, advanced threat analysis, and operations research/developmental planning;
  • Develop business in the above-described thrust areas and nurture trusted relationships across a diverse portfolio of government sponsors in the national security space;
  • Effectively manage internal allocated budgets for investments in professional development, equipment modernization, and facilities upgrades consistent with Division, Laboratory, and Institute strategic objectives;
  • Ensure that all Ethics, Compliance, and Security Policies and Regulations of the organization are followed by staff within the Division.
  • Recruit and retain the requisite talent necessary to execute the Divisions strategic vision;
  • Establish mentoring and growth opportunities for leadership (in project and/or organization management) to individuals both inside and outside the Division.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • A Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related discipline.
  • At least three years of demonstrated management experience
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Top Secret/SCI Clearance
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related discipline.
  • Prior leadership of sponsored research projects and sponsor interactions related to the program portfolios of the SASD.

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

  • 12 years of related experience with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related discipline
  • 9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related discipline

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
