The University of Utah seeks applications for the Director of the School of Computing.  The University of Utah is a Carnegie Research I Institution, and the School of Computing is an exciting, highly productive unit with a 50-year history of excellence in computer science education, innovation, and research.   Objective measures of research productivity put the School among the top 25 computer science departments in the nation.    The School of Computing, with over 50 faculty, has a large, growing undergraduate program in computer science and a newly created BS degree in data science.   The School offers graduate degrees in computer science and computing, with a wide range of research tracks, enrolling approximately 350 graduate students.  The University has invested significantly in the School’s recent growth, and significant further resources are anticipated.  


The Director of the School reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering, and is responsible for internal leadership, administration, and external representation of the School—including managing relationships with other campus entities, industry, and a range of stakeholders. The Director provides vision and leads the faculty in establishing and implementing strategic plans, and works collaboratively with faculty to implement the School’s priorities for advancing its status in research and education. The Director manages the School on a daily basis with duties including, allocating financial resources, recruiting faculty and students, evaluating faculty and staff, guiding program assessment, and managing teaching resources. 


Candidates should have an excellent, proven academic/research program with international visibility, appropriate for the rank of Professor, as well as demonstrated leadership and administrative skills.   Candidates will be evaluated on their academic credentials and their vision for future of the School, as well as their previous administrative successes, experience in successful consensus-building, skills in engaging with community and campus stakeholders, and ideas/plans for broadening participation in the field of computing at all levels.
