The Director of Engineering at Meggitt Sensing Systems – Orange County will lead and mentor a multidisciplinary Engineering team through the development and delivery of aerospace and defense products and systems, including fuel and hydraulic sensing (level and quality), gas pressure monitoring, ignition monitoring, speed sensing, and acceleration sensing. The Director will oversee development of sensing technologies and products throughout the entire product lifecycle. Fundamental technologies include Time Domain Reflectometry, MEMS, Surface Acoustic Wave, high temperature electronics, wireless power transmission, and wireless communications. The Director will contribute to customer proposals and internal research and development proposals. He/She will ensure execution of awarded development contracts through preliminary design, detailed design, qualification testing, and finally certification. The lifecycle also includes transferring new designs to production and maintaining design integrity and recurring cost through production sustainment. The Director of Engineering will provide leadership to people and product development programs within engineering to ensure schedule, cost, and quality of deliverables meets or exceeds leadership and customer expectations.

Meggitt Sensing Systems delivers condition monitoring systems, high performance sensors, power generation, conversion and storage, flight displays, and avionics and air data systems. The Orange County site concentrates on a range of high performance sensors such as accelerometers and ignition detectors, Fuel quantity and quality sensors, Hydraulic quantity sensors, and wireless tire pressure monitoring sensors.

Job Core Responsibilities

  • Guide the engineers to communicate and coordinate effectively with other departments.
  • Provide leadership and career development opportunities to engineers.
  • Communicate clearly and decisively to ensure that each employee understands their roles/function and how to achieve objectives.
  • Provide technical oversight to the product development team to minimize schedule, cost and technical risk.
  • Increase efficiencies and improve processes on product development programs.
  • Improve quality of first build and derivative programs work.
  • Monitor and establish metrics for tracking project progress through completion.
  • Facilitate a culture to support clearly identified performance metrics and accountability to those metrics.
  • Support the root cause analysis process by providing resources and the associated detailed engineering analysis to result in permanent solutions and corrective actions.
  • Develop and implement schedules.
  • Implement standardized processes within the department to support product development utilizing aerospace and industry certification standards.
  • Establish projected workload and capacity planning for engineers in the department.
  • Participate and lead go/no-go decisions on potential programs/projects.
  • Work with SS&M to establish proposed annual project development plans, budgets and schedules.
  • Work with Operations and the industrialization Manager to provide a handoff from Engineering to Manufacturing ensuring that recurring cost and yield targets are met.
  • Support issues in manufacturing to ensure that the Operations on-time delivery and quality metrics are achieved.
  • May be a functional/technology expert responsible for supporting the Import/Export Compliance Organization


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required. MBA or MS degree in engineering preferred.
Years Experience: Minimum 10 years of experience with aerospace and defense manufacturing companies producing components and systems. Prior engineering management experience required.
