Job Summary

The Director for Active Learning, Electrical Engineering is a member of the Active Learning Labs (ALL) leadership team at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). This position reports directly to the Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning and provides leadership for and oversight of the electrical engineering labs within the Active Learning Labs. The Director contributes to and carries out the vision of the SEAS Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning through the management and support of the electrical engineering group.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Lab Responsibilities:

  • Ensure a welcoming and inclusive lab environment for all students, staff, and faculty.
  • Oversee and manage the operation and daily activities of the electrical engineering teaching facilities.
  • Partner and collaborate with SEAS faculty to design, create, develop, and implement new laboratory activities for courses. Oversee faculty engagement and recruitment for new courses. Provide support and assistance with the development of new lab activities in other disciplines as needed.
  • Develop, supervise, and instruct technical hands-on workshops on electrical engineering topics during the fall and spring semesters, as well as for special programs and summer activities.
  • Train students and course teaching fellows on the use and application of electrical engineering lab instrumentation. Assist students with laboratory activities.
  • Oversee the expansion of the electrical engineering instructional labs at the new Allston campus. Seek faculty input and plan for state-of-the-art lab instrumentation for course support. Review faculty requests for new equipment, purchase and maintain new equipment, and work with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and Science Operations to ensure that lab inventory adheres to Boston safety regulations.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy lab working environment. Oversee compliance and implementation of safety protocols in the electrical engineering labs. Responsible for the maintenance and enforcement of safety regulations during and after regular lab operation hours. Responsible for the maintenance and updates of lab equipment; interacting with vendors to ensure ongoing maintenance/servicing of lab resources.


  • Advise undergraduate students on senior design projects and provide support as a freshman academic advisor.
  • Actively participate in graduate-level Master's in Design Engineering (MDE) program within SEAS and the Graduate School of Design (GSD), serving as mentor for graduate-level student projects.
  • May serve as teaching staff for senior-level engineering design projects course, ES100.

Staff Management:

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean to build and manage the electrical engineering team within the Active Learning Labs. Develop team and unit-based growth strategies.
  • Manage the hiring process for team members, directly supervise regular staff and temporary employees, including part-time unit interns and undergraduate lab monitors.
  • Assign work, support skill and career development, provide regular and ongoing performance feedback, handle performance issues, participate in problem resolution, and conduct performance reviews.
  • Work closely with SEAS human resources on staff recruitment, employee relations, policies, and other human resources related issues.

Financial Management:

  • Manage unit spending for all electrical engineering courses, evaluating ways to reduce spending by sharing and/or recycling purchases within our interdisciplinary sub-teams.
  • Develop annual unit budget vision and capital equipment planning. Provide guidance on new acquisitions and purchases. Create detailed semester-based spending reports to be shared with the Assistant Dean.

Other Administrative:

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean to extend Active Learning Labs (ALL) course support beyond SEAS, developing curriculum for courses within the General Education Program, Graduate School of Design, and Harvard Business School.
  • Provide regular and ongoing executive updates and unit summaries to the Assistant Dean.
  • Develop semester-based unit vision and end-of-the-semester executive reports to the Assistant Dean.
  • Foster strong partnerships with other unit directors, managers and staff within SEAS and the broader Harvard community.
  • Partner with colleagues on summer outreach program(s). May contribute to activities such as curriculum design, recruiting faculty, scheduling and space planning logistics, and/or budgeting.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of 7 years of professional and/or academic experience in electrical engineering
