The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a global project to build a multi-purpose radio telescope that will play a major role in answering key questions in modern astrophysics and cosmology.  Thirteen countries are now participating in the project, with others engaged in discussions regarding possible membership.  Facilities for the new telescope will be located in South Africa and Australia, with our headquarters in a purpose-built building at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire, UK.  SKA HQ currently houses around 90 staff but has just undergone a major expansion to accommodate up to 150 staff as the project moves towards construction and operation of the SKA telescopes.

Negotiations between the governments of SKA member countries to establish the SKA Observatory as an Inter-Governmental Organisation (IGO) have recently concluded; the IGO is expected to be established in late 2020.

This role would suit an enthusiastic and motivated digital engineer who is interested in working in radio astronomy.

The Role

The digital signal processing (DSP) engineer will work within the domain specialist team, supporting the signal processing domain specialist, to supervise the SKA design in the discipline.  Digital processing is a key discipline for the SKA telescope during construction and its entire life cycle and the work will be crosscutting into many different work packages (WPs).The DSP engineer will routinely work with external contractors, scientists and engineers from partners organisation, across subsystems and systems as necessary

Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties

  • Take part with the engineering team of the SKAO (SKA-TE) in reviewing the design, testing and verification. Also supporting the deployment and operation of the digital processing system used in SKA-Mid and SKA-Low telescopes;
  • Support the Signal Processing Domain Specialist in providing engineering analysis, technical notes, and reports related to the SKA signal processing systems;
  • Participate and provide specialist assistance to working groups, colleagues and engineering project managers;
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the SKA Project Engineer or a member of SKA Organization Senior Management Team;

  • Good experience in programming, particularly in Matlab, C++, and Python;
  • Knowledge of radio astronomy instrumentation and engineering, including correlation, beamforming, transient-processing systems (pulsar and fast radio bursts), and digital signal processing systems used in single-dish and synthetic-aperture radio telescopes;
  • A flexible team player who is adaptable to changes;
  • Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to an audience that spans a wide range of cultures and background;
  • Willing and able to travel to SKA partners sites on an occasional base.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
