Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Applied Embedded Systems Division (AES) is currently seeking a highly motivated, self-starting Digital Hardware Engineer for a full-time research position. This position supports the design, development, testing and integration of custom or Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) computing, signal processing, or communication circuit cards in embedded applications. These products are likely to include high-density Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), System-on-Chips (SoCs), multi-core embedded processors and high-speed communication links in environments with low size weight and power (SWAP) and high-reliability requirements. Development associated with this position will support research and applications in the radar and electronic warfare domains.

Job Duties

  • Analyze system and functional requirements to develop embedded hardware solutions
  • Conduct component selection and perform technology trade-off analyses within the context of overall system performance 
  • Conduct printed circuit board (PCB) design, layout, procurement, fabrication and testing
  • Develop and update design documentation
  • Develop unit tests cases for hardware, developed software, and also support broader test support needs as necessary
  • Develop and present technical presentations for internal peer reviews and sponsor design reviews
  • Interface and coordinate with other team members including other developers, testers, system engineers, etc.
  • Participate in technical meetings with GTRI stakeholders and sponsor personnel
  • Develop technical papers for conferences, speak publicly and present briefings to potential customers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related degree.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with printed circuit board (PCB) layout
  • Knowledge of best practices for embedded systems design
  • Knowledge of analog and digital circuit analysis and synthesis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Altium Designer for PCB design
  • Experience with lab test equipment such as logic analyzers, multimeters, and oscilloscopes
  • Experience with Analog-to-Digital (ADC) and Digital-to-Analog (DAC) Converters
  • Experience with high reliability and/or military hardware development
  • Active SECRET clearance

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
