We have an opening for a Deputy for Transformational Weapon Science to work with the WPD Program Director (PD) in all aspects of Program leadership and management in the Weapon and Physics Design (WPD) Program. You will work closely with the WPD Program Director to accomplish WPD and WCI programmatic deliverables and will be responsible for the Transformational Technologies and Integrated Weapon Science programs. You will interact with all levels of management both within LLNL and external to the Laboratory including DOE/NNSA, DoD, academic institutions, management at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), the Nevada Nuclear Security Site (NNSS) and the NNSA Production Agencies (PAs). This position is in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Directorate reporting to the WPD Program Director.

Essential Duties

  • Manage and execute a roughly $100M portfolio related to Transformational Weapon Science and supporting activities.
  • Provide leadership, vision, strategic and tactical planning, significant management and programmatic oversight of the LLNL scope of the ASD/Scorpius project.
  • Select and manage leadership for Transformational Technologies and ultimately be accountable for design activities to help dramatically reduce time and cost of future weapon programs.
  • Select and manage leadership and be accountable for Integrated Weapon Science including primary and secondary physics, outputs and survivability, modeling methodologies and modeling suites.
  • Serve as the lead interface to the NNSAs Office of Engineering and Technology Maturation (NA-115) including the integration with appropriate elements of Weapon Technology and Engineering (WTE) Program
  • Develop, manage, and communicate program objectives, accomplishments, and plans to WPD workforce.
  • Represent the WPD Program to WCI management at internal and external meetings, working groups, and on special assignments, including preparing and giving presentations. Represent the PD in his absence across a broad range of issues in a variety of environments.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal/external customers and sponsors.
  • Promote and maintain strong relationships and communication with NNSA, DoD elements associated with nuclear weapons and other NNSA laboratories.
  • Develop and promote partnerships and collaborations across LLNL with disciplines and other programs to ensure programmatic deliverables are met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in physics, engineering or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience and expertise in the physics design and development of nuclear weapons and knowledge of WCI and the LLNL weapons program.
  • Extensive leadership skills in a high-technology research and development environment and experience providing leadership in and supporting large-scale projects and programs, and the ability to safely and securely deliver results.
  • Expertise in strategic planning and organizational dynamics and extensive experience in decision-making based on aggregate information and the recommendations of others that significantly affect the ability of the organization and Laboratory to achieve its overall objectives and long-range goals.
  • Extensive experience sustaining productive relationships with other divisions, directorates, laboratories, UC, NNSA management, other institutions across the DOE and DoD enterprise, and external advisors and reviewers.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of national-security policy issues and with Laboratory and external contacts working these issues.
  • Expert communication skills, both written and verbal, necessary to effectively explain, present, negotiate, advise, and influence all levels of management and government officials.
  • Expert problem solving, analytical, technical, organizational, and management skills necessary to independently advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions.
  • Familiarity with formal project management practices and Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS)

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
