Job Description

GTRI- Deputy COO has the overall responsibility to provide vision and leadership for GTRI operations and operational units, including organizational effectiveness strategy development and implementation. The Deputy COO reports directly to the COO of GTRI and helps to oversee operations and procedures in the areas of capital planning, facilities management, lease management, contract management, organizational excellence, emergency management, safety and security, program management, and other operational services. The Deputy COO will also actively participate in GT-wide operations strategy, governance, and leadership roles by partnering closely with GTs administration, Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), and other unit leadership across the institute.

Job Duties

  • Guides the successful completion of major programs
  • Serves as supervisor typically supervising project managers across multiple projects/teams. Instrumental in maintaining existing research portfolio and attracting and obtaining major new research programs
  • Recognized as an architecture and integration SME in sponsor community
  • Apply and/or develop highly advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories, and concepts
  • Advances knowledge in the field that may form the basis of newly developed concepts, theories, and products
  • Serves as the customer's technical leadership interface for the project
  • Technical and procedural knowledge recognized across peer organizations and called on to provide guidance on external organizational issues
  • Provides subject matter training to others related to how organizations can achieve their strategic goals
  • Act as advisor to GTRI senior leadership on all aspects of operations, including, policy changes, and business strategies and determining appropriate investments in coordination with GTRI Finance

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Masters degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Masters degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business or a related field of study and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 20+ years of relevant full-time experience with at least 15 years of experience in a leadership/management role
  • Demonstrated C-Suite ability and leadership experience in leading a large/complex organization, with multiple missions and functional support requirements
  • Excel at strategic thinking, be open to new perspectives and better ways to do things; and be creative, a visionary, and manage innovation well
  • Experience in project management and closing out complex projects
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in leading, intelligence, training, security, human capital management, financial management, logistics, facilities, acquisition, and contracting
  • Demonstrated experience in developing organizational strategies and decision-making that has an organization-wide impact
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, strategic planning, change management, collaboration, and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated executive-level communication and influencing skills with the ability to resolve issues, build consensus among groups of diverse internal/external stakeholders, and negotiate and mediate conflict
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Must have the ability to delegate effectively
