We have an opening for a Department Head in the Technical Information Department (TID). TID has responsibility for a wide variety of communication functions in support of the Laboratorys national mission. These include Technical Publications, Editorial, Graphic Design, Visualization, Web Design, Library, Records Management, Photography and Printing Services. You will lead a creative and diverse workforce, which is comprised of editors, librarians, graphic designers, animators, photographers, and print specialists in a fast-changing technical environment. This position is in the Business Directorate.


- Direct department operations and oversee all TID products and services to ensure customers receive high-quality, creative content that meets their business needs.
- Evaluate industry trends to identify new skills, tools, technology and methods and assess overall organizational effectiveness and structure to identify opportunities for growth and greater alignment with the Laboratorys mission.
- Plan, oversee, and direct development and implementation of quality and cost-effective technical information and library services for Laboratory customers.
- Collaborate with the leadership team to create an environment that motivates and enables team members to work at their highest potential while fostering career development and growth that is aligned with organizational and personal objectives.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key business owners and senior management
- Oversee department personnel management to include hiring, staff development, leadership development, succession planning, training, performance evaluation, salary management, and corrective actions.
- Act as primary interface with senior management of the Laboratory, National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) to ensure compliance with policy, public law, and contractual requirements.
- Collaborate with the management team in developing and implementing policies, procedures and implementation plans to comply with Laboratory and external requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.


- Bachelors Degree in Business Administration or in a field relevant to technical communications such as English, Communications, Journalism or a scientific area, or the equivalent combination of related experience, education and training.
- Extensive senior management experience leading a large customer-focused organization and ensuring the business needs of the customers are met.
- Subject matter expertise in the area of technical communication including significant knowledge of industry standards and trends pertaining to technical information and the ability to appropriately communicate and disseminate to a broad audience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of strategic planning, workforce planning processes, and organizational dynamics with experience in long-range planning and establishing strategic and operational goals that are in alignment with the mission.
- Expert verbal and written communication skills to effectively explain, present, advise and influence internal and external stakeholders and all levels of management on a variety of issues; expert collaboration, facilitation, and problem-solving skills necessary to direct an organization, build cooperative multi-disciplinary teams, and interact with management and customers/sponsors.
- Significant experience in performance management and supervision of department staff and managers, including performance issues, career development, leadership development, succession planning, annual performance appraisals, and salary management.
- Proven leadership experience to grow and lead a versatile team of design talent while influencing culture, providing strong mentorship and collaborating across disciplines.
- Significant experience establishing policies and procedures for the organization and/or institution. Experience in strategic and workforce planning, managing budgets, organization dynamics and establishing strategic and operational goals for the organization and/or institution.


- Experience leading and overseeing a variety of cross-organizational and integrated projects.
- Experience working at a DOE Laboratory or in a similar regulated environment and/or experience creating and sustaining productive working relationships with DOE and other federal agencies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
