Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is a Carnegie-classified doctoral research institution with high research activity in northeast Baltimore, Maryland. The Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering serves the world as an intellectual and creative resource by supporting, empowering and preparing high-quality graduates to grow the future, lead the world, and innovate everywhere. Morgan currently ranks as one of the top two or three schools in the United States with respect to graduation of African American Engineers.


The School of Engineering is located on the north-side of the Morgan State University campus and operates in a three-building complex, which includes the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Building, the William Donald Schaefer Building, and a significant portion of the Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies (CBEIS). The School has accredited undergraduate programs in Transportation and Civil, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering, and graduate programs that offer the Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Engineering in four disciplines.


The Dean of the School of Engineering will report to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean will be responsible for the implementation of a vision for innovative strategic growth; leadership through a shared governance process of dynamic faculty, staff and students; management of several research centers and facilities; budget oversight; and leadership of academic and research programs, which prepare students for careers in the industries of the future. The Dean will build upon the established national networks to position Morgan State University to be on the leading edge of science and engineering.


Morgan State University is seeking a Dean who has energy, vision and a strong desire to grow both our education and research programs; one who is keenly aware of the technologies that will underpin the industries of the future. The ideal candidate is an innovative administrator, an accomplished researcher/scholar, a dedicated educator and an individual who understands the challenges of and opportunities for a public, urban, research university.


The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree or equivalent (Ph.D. in engineering preferred), along with: a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and service or success and accomplishment in the corporate or governmental sectors sufficient for appointment as a full professor with tenure; evidence of successful, progressive and entrepreneurial leadership at a level equivalent to department chair or above; and successful experience in strategic planning and fundraising, are needed. Evidence of strong interpersonal, communication, and facilitation/collaboration skills (with specific focus on cross-disciplinary teaching and research initiatives) are highly desired. A robust record demonstrating effective collaborative efforts, and an ability to think “outside the box” when problem solving, is vital.
