Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking a mid-level Cybersecurity-focused SecDevOps engineer who will provide support for an ongoing DoD Cybersecurity research and development program. Candidates will be required to research cutting edge and emerging technologies in support of developing mission critical Cybersecurity capabilities for the DoD. Experience deploying information systems security solutions while working in support of the risk management frameworks and associated processes used by the DoD and Navy for systems development, accreditation, and implementation will be critical for success as will the fully adjudicated and active Top Secret clearance needed to support the role. The successful candidate will have experience researching and implementing emerging information systems technologies including containerization, infrastructure orchestration and automation, and cloud capabilities including Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure, and will also be proficient with tools such as Puppet, Ansible, and other like-tools to automate deployment of systems, manage applications, and enhance productivity. This technically challenging and dynamic role will also require a wide array of information systems support skills including network engineering expertise and preferably certifications (e.g. Cisco CCNA and/or Juniper JNCIA-Junos) along with deep technical understanding of production/operations support requirements. Knowledge of applications and enterprise architectures is vital as is the ability to problem solve, identifying and analyzing issues and researching, developing, and implementing solutions. Candidates should have the ability and willingness to support routine maintenance activities including performing security patching, updating software, and optimizing systems configurations across a variety of appliances such as servers, networking equipment, and supporting operating systems. Experience working in an Agile development environment is preferred. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in performing research and analysis, being a problem solver, and a team player who is capable of working in a technically challenging environment.

Qualified applicants will possess at a minimum a B.S. in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field and 5+ years of experience supporting enterprise information systems. Successful applicants will have significant demonstrated experience in the above-mentioned technologies. The position is based in San Diego, CA. Travel may be required to support client work including technical briefings and solution implementation. It is expected that this position will be fully covered by externally funded research programs.

Job Duties

Leads or contribute to sponsored research projects;

Develops, coordinates, and implements systems engineering plans, processes and procedures, requirements analyses, system definition, and integration activities;

Researches and develops solutions for infrastructure automation and orchestration in support of DoD Cybersecurity initiatives;

Leverages tools such as Puppet, Ansible, and other like-applications to automate deployment and management of systems;

Researches and develops continuous integration, continuous deployment (CI/CD) solutions supporting rapid capability fielding;

Researches and develops cloud capabilities leveraging technologies including Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure;

Secures Linux and Windows Operating Systems per DoD STIG requirements;

Performs ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configures CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required;

Applies OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis;

Creates, edits, and deletes user accounts;

Coordinates closely with team members in an Agile systems development environment.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Masters degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical.

Required Minimum Qualifications

5+ years demonstrated experience as a systems and security administrator or engineer working with Linux or Windows server operating systems and Windows desktops;

Strong understanding of Navy or DoD information technology and security architectures and frameworks; Strong understanding of Navy accreditation and change control processes;

Strong communication skills to be able to accurately communicate relevant project technical information to stakeholders in a timely manner;

Relevant technical certifications to meet DoD 8570, IAT Level II requirements;

Experience with and/or knowledge of implementing orchestration solutions such as Puppet, Ansible, or other like-tools to automate deployment and management of systems;

Experience with scripting languages such as Powershell, Python, etc.;

Experience implementing solutions using Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure technologies

Working knowledge of VMware vSphere, vSAN, vCenter, and Horizon View; Strong Linux troubleshooting skillset; Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.x;

Familiarity with SELINUX;

Understanding of Windows Group Policy Objects (GPOs);

Network administration capabilities (e.g. Cisco CCNA and/or Juniper JNCIA-Junos skillsets); Capable of network troubleshooting;

Excellent verbal/written communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences;

Ability to conduct technical surveys, investigate technical issues, and determine/revise/improve technical solutions that address performance gaps and/or operational requirements.

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
