We have an opening for a computer scientist with a background in cybersecurity, with emphasis on modeling and simulation of cyber physical systems. You will contribute to research projects in the area of cybersecurity for critical infrastructure systems and civilian networks. You will leverage LLNLs high performance computing to enable development of high-fidelity, large-scale models of cyber and cyber physical systems to understand effects, vulnerabilities, large scale impact and mitigations. This position is programmatically in Global Securitys E Program and administratively will report to the payroll supervisor of the hiring organization.This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.Essential Duties- Under limited direction, develop new models that will enable analysis of cyber attacks in information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) network environments.- Contribute to the development of creative new techniques that will leverage modeling and simulation for detecting and analyzing malware for both IT and OT environments.- Develop models of IT and industrial controls systems (ICS) components and cyber-physical systems (CPS).- Build simulations leveraging LLNLs high performance computing capability to demonstrate impacts of cyber and cyber-physical attacks at scale.- Create hardware in the loop simulations in support of various projects, collaborating with LLNLs cyber-physical testbed team to.- Develop, analyze, parse and reverse engineering network protocols.- Develop cross-domain strategies for increased security and resiliency of critical infrastructure, working with researchers in other disciplines.- Perform other duties as assigned.In Addition, at the SES.3 Level- Lead multidisciplinary teams in the areas of modeling and simulation for critical infrastructure cyber security, information security, and network security. Continue building LLNLs modeling and simulation capability.- Pursue program development opportunities by co-authoring proposals and proposing ideas that will address sponsor needs. Identify program growth opportunities for existing customers, understanding the customer space and needs.- Present results and provide subject matter expertise across multi-discipline projects engaging with sponsors on a regular basis.Qualifications- Masters degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.- Software engineering experience in C, C++, or Python.- Comprehensive experience in modeling and simulation tools such as ns-3, OPNET, OMNET++, GridLAB-D, or PSLF.- Understanding of and/or experience in control systems, OT and ICS/SCADA security.- Broad experience in communication network protocols (protocol development, parsing, reverse engineering).- Experience in high performance computing, parallel programing, or cloud computing.- Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with contending priorities, as well as approaching difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity to change focus when necessary.- Proficient verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate comprehensive knowledge effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and to non-cyber experts and the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment.In Addition, at the SES.3 Level- Significant software engineering experience and advanced knowledge of and experience in modeling and simulation of cyber and cyber-physical systems.- Demonstrated project leadership experience and ability to work independently while effectively managing concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities.- Experience writing research proposals and securing sponsor funding, with advanced interpersonal, verbal, and written skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and provide advice to management.Desired Qualifications- Ph.D. degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field.- Systems engineering, including practical experience in critical infrastructure cybersecurity and experience configuring and using engineering equipment.- Knowledge of one or more of the following computer science disciplines: parallel programming, embedded systems, high performance computing, scientific data analysis, machine learning, systems programming, software engineering, and big data technologies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
