The Electrical and Electronics Systems Research Division (EESRD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks highly innovative Cyber-Physical Engineers/Scientists whose research interests are focused on the design and development of cybersecurity solutions for operational technologies which reside in energy, manufacturing and transportation systems.

You should have educational backgrounds and experience in the design, development, and understanding of cybersecurity challenges/solutions as they relate to complex supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and industrial control systems (ICS). You will have the opportunity to develop proof-of-concept cybersecurity capabilities and test these capabilities on ORNL and strategic partnership unique testbeds and platforms. Collaborative research and development projects allow you to participate in national security, transportation futures, advanced manufacturing and energy resiliency shaping advancements.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

• Possess and maintain knowledge and understanding of cybersecurity challenges as they relate to national and international energy, manufacturing and/or transportation systems
• Identify and remediate technological gaps associated with the cybersecurity of energy, manufacturing and/or transportation systems
• Conduct research and development of scalable cyber-physical security solutions for energy, manufacturing and/or transportation systems
• Theory development, proof-of-concept security system implementations, computational experimentation under sponsor guidance, and publication in scholarly venues.
• Contribute to the group in research proposal preparation and scientific program development activities for additional sponsored research and development projects.


Basic Qualifications:

  • The position requires a completed Masters’/Ph.D. degree or is scheduled to complete a Masters’/Ph.D. within the next 6 months in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, or closely related fields.
  • Prior research experience in cyber-physical systems and applications is required.
  • Prior research work in one or more applications of cyber-physical architectures in areas such as energy, manufacturing, or transportation is required.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with actual experimentation on state-of-the-art processing of cyber-physical security event datasets is strongly desired.
  • The ability to gain and maintain a U.S. security clearance is required.
  • The ability to communicate research effectively through presentations and publications is strongly desired.
  • The ability to work well as a team member, and at a level commensurate with a post-master's/doctoral researcher for working with sponsors and fellow scientists.
