Gender Quotas in the Workplace

Always a polarizing topic, gender quotas can elicit different reactions depending on context, according to recent research.

Advocates in favor of gender quotas typically favor the approach in terms of correcting an imbalance in the work place while opponents believe that better, more qualified candidates can be overlooked in favor of filling a quota.

Researchers conducted a survey of over one thousand respondents and found that when applied in industries where women are thought to be discriminated against, respondents were in favor of gender quotas.

Conversely, respondents were not in favor of the quotas if it was thought that discrimination did not exist in that particular industry.
