How will the gig economy affect the current and future employment options for engineers? Will engineers embrace a career of full-time freelancing? Those who read the economic tea leaves predict that employers in the future increasingly will hire specific skills for specific projects, creating demand for freelancers. Given that engineering work is project-based, the match between engineers and the future job market structure looks advantageous. Add to that synergy the predilection for millennials to look for different rewards from a career than their predecessors, such as better work-life balance, full-time freelancing, or career freelancing, could be the future norm.
