Job Description

The Computer Vision and Machine Learning Engineer/Scientist in the Opto-Analysis, Algorithms, and Software (OAAS) Branch's Washington DC field office will provide computer vision, artificial intelligence, and machine learning expertise to develop algorithms for advanced Electro-Optical (EO)/Infrared (IR) sensing and autonomy applications to meet customer requirements and internal research goals. The job provides opportunities to develop advanced technology and publish research in the areas of Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) sensor systems in both passive and active sensing modalities. Our team designs, builds, and tests the hardware in the entire imaging chain. Key technical areas include Hyperspectral and Multispectral Imaging Processing; EO System and Component Analysis and Characterization; Optical Imaging and Tagging; and Airborne Lidar System Design, Construction, and Operation for real-time topography, FOPEN, and bathymetry.

Job Duties:

  • Support and/or lead technical efforts focused on the exploitation of EO/IR and lidar imagery and data via Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) for applications in autonomous navigation, intelligence gathering, damage assessment, and targeting.
  • Contribute to key technical efforts in the analysis and design of optical systems for remote sensing applications
  • Document work in memoranda, sponsor briefs, conference proceedings, and journal articles. Brief senior leadership and sponsors as required
  • Support field integration, data collection, and other testing activities at test sites and facilities
  • Participate in new business development efforts by contributing to white papers, Request for Information (RFI)/Request for Proposal (RFP) responses, and sponsor briefs, and by proposing new research areas suitable for internal research and development (IR&D) funding
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Vision, Electrical Engineering, Imaging Science, Optical Engineering, Optical Science, or Physics.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Vision, Electrical Engineering, Imaging Science, Optical Engineering, Optical Science, or Physics and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Vision, Electrical Engineering, Imaging Science, Optical Engineering, Optical Science, or Physics and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Vision, Electrical Engineering, Imaging Science, Optical Engineering, Optical Science, or Physics.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with Computer vision or image processing
  • Experience with Artificial intelligence or machine learning
  • Experience with LIDAR and/or Electro-Optical (EO)/Infrared (IR) cameras

Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's degree with a graduation date of May,2021 and skills relevant to this position will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with developing, training, and evaluation of deep learning networks
  • Experience with Autonomous navigation algorithms
  • Experience with Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Experience with Point cloud processing
  • Experience with Geomatics
  • Experience with Kalman filtering/Inertial Navigation System (INS) Processing
  • Experience programming/scripting in Matlab, Python
  • Experience Implementing algorithms in C/C++, C#, Visual Studio
  • Experience with Linux - Red Hat, Ubuntu, CentOS
  • Experience with open-source software tools
  • Experience with project management or task leadership skills

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
