Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are seeking a strategic and visionary leader for the Statistical Sciences Group (CCS-6), the premier capability group at LANL for providing the core foundational methodologies for accurate and defensible approaches to data analysis. CCS-6 develops methods for exploratory data analysis, design of experiments, and for building models for prediction, classification and uncertainty quantification. As data science and machine learning become more prominent in computational science, the role of statistics has become both increasingly important and integrated with related R&D in computer science, mathematics and engineering such as materials science and advanced manufacturing; environmental modeling; next-gen energy science and technology; space and planetary systems science; cosmology; epidemiology and public health; cyber security and network science; image and multi-source signals analysis; future computing; and analysis of complex engineered systems, including the nuclear stockpile. High-performance computing and simulation and large-scale data analysis play a prominent role in many of these disciplines and applications.



  • Ph.D. in Statistics, Mathematics or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Record of developing and leading R&D in a diverse technical environment
    • Demonstrated technical expertise, including a strong record of peer-reviewed publication
    • Ability to create teams, as well as coach, mentor and lead technical staff
    • Experience in the application or research of data analysis methodologies
    • Ability to obtain DOE Q clearance (usually requires U.S. citizenship)


Desired skills:

  • Technical leadership experience in national security science programs
  • Knowledge of Department of Energy programs and research offices
    • Experience in successful proposal writing and R&D program development
    • Ability to identify and respond to new opportunities
    • Experience with long‐range planning and program development activities
