Position Description
HX5 LLC, in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center, currently has an opening available for an individual to support aircraft, communications systems architecture definition and frequency spectrum research. This work is part of a project area to develop communication system concepts and test technologies for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) that include commuter Air Transport and Package delivery services in urban environments.
The work will involve: 1) Assisting NASA communications development team in formulating Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) architectures that enable urban environment aircraft operations leading to eventual operations with unmanned, automated and autonomous aircraft.  This will include conducting technology evaluations to identify candidate CNS systems for UAM aircraft operations and to support information exchange, surveillance, and navigation demands in an urban airspace setting. 2) Assisting with Radio Frequency spectrum investigation and analysis to identify candidate bands for critical and non-critical aviation information exchanges to support UAM airborne systems. Work will focus on conducting analysis to estimate the spectrum requirements to support all CNS functions, identifying candidate non-aviation bands, and investigating and assessing spectrally efficient technologies for aviation use.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Experience/background with Air-to-Ground communications technologies to enable Command and Control for airborne vehicles and Navigation and Surveillance applications use with aircraft.
  • Background/familiarity with the current state of Urban Air Mobility concept  
  • Experience with process for frequency spectrum assignment. Ability to perform analysis to identify required RF spectrum.
  • Familiar with systems engineering principles and process for project level concept definition.
Other Desired Skills:
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a development team
Electrical, Aerospace, Aeronautical, or Mechanical Engineering degree with one of the following combinations of education and experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 to 10 years of experience
  • Master’s degree with 3 to 6 years of experience
  • Ph.D. with 0 to 3 years of experience
*Must be a US Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
**Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance for the position.
