We have one opening for a Communications Electrical Engineer to work on projects and initiatives with a focus on U.S. national security. You will be a member of an engineering team that will provide space mission engineering solutions for both national security and basic science investigations with sponsors including NASA, Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) and other government agencies. As an engineering team member, you will work on all aspects of space system hardware from design and analysis to assembly, integration and testing. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Work as an integral part of a small team of scientists and engineers to develop technical proposals for spacecraft missions including payload electrical specifications, spacecraft subsystem electrical specification, and cost and schedule estimates.
- Review, advise, and conduct moderately complex to complex analysis and development studies in support of networked communications, including RF and laser technologies, and analysis of novel or unprecedented problems as an information resource to system engineers.
- Lead communication model design for conceptualization, simulation, and emulation.
- Exercise comprehensive technical knowledge of the wireless communication trade space.
- Lead moderately complex to complex spacecraft subsystems design reviews, integrated test planning and execution under limited direction.
- Utilize comprehensive knowledge in emulation control and analysis to add to technical depth of projects supported.
- Contribute comprehensive technical knowledge, working as part of small teams testing and evaluating wireless communication.
- Interface with customer organizations, payload science experts, analysts, manufacturing engineers, and project staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Apply advanced engineering solutions and technical analysis to develop and implement creative solutions to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues including link emulation, optical propagation, and/or mesh networking algorithms.
- Develop radio communications path to flight vision and lead a team supporting spacecraft launch and early operations, maintaining spacecraft health and safety, optimizing performance, and troubleshooting anomalies independently and under minimal direction.
- Contribute to mission planning functions, including design and analysis of complex spacecraft communication requirements, electrical component assurance test plan and operational concepts.
- Provide advanced technical direction to small teams testing and evaluating wireless communication.

- Masters degree in aeronautical/aerospace or electrical engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Comprehensive skills and knowledge of moderately complex to complex hardware design simulation, and testing which may include planning, costing, and scheduling.
- Comprehensive communications experience and broad knowledge with modeling and analyzing moderately complex to complex wireless networks.
- Broad experience with directional and/or omnidirectional radio modeling.
- Proficiency and broad knowledge and experience in operating radio emulation hardware.
- Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary project team that may include engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians.
- Ability to devise solutions for moderately complex to complex technical problems that require in-depth analysis of tangible and intangible factors.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information to others.

In addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge and experience working with advanced concepts related to effects of atmosphere on orbit and/or orbit to ground communication.
- Significant experience, knowledge, and track record of success developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of complex multi-disciplinary problems and leading corrective actions where necessary which may include providing technical direction to others.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple parallel tasks, often requiring the resolution of conflicting work requirements and prioritization of tasks toward predetermined long-range targets.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD degree in communication engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of laser communication and beam forming model development and analysis.
- Experience with mesh network node management and authentication.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.If you are selected, we willinitiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
