Job Description

The Aerospace, Transportation, and Advanced Systems (ATAS) laboratory is seeking entry-level roboticists for the Robotics and Autonomous Systems branch. Developers would focus on path planning, computer vision, and simulation for applications that include autonomous aircraft. The division supports work across many branches of the Department of Defense (DoD), including the Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps, and Office of the Secretary of Defense. Key products include simulation tools, system analyses, and physical aircraft systems.

Job Duties

Tasks will include designing and implementing software algorithms in C++ for control of autonomous robots, following a standardized build process. This includes testing and analysis using simulation tools. Duties will encompass research as well as development and integration of algorithms for robotics applications, as well as occasional field test experimentation. The position will involve the generation of research reports requiring excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or related field of study.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or related field of study.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelors degree program relevant to this position will be considered
  • Experience with C/C++ and Python
  • Experience following software engineering best practices
  • Strong mathematical foundation and problem-solving skills
  • Proven research or software project experience in at least one of these areas:
    • Multi-robot collaboration algorithm development
    • Path planning and navigation
    • Optimal control and estimation
    • Software engineering processes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in integrating and deploying robotics algorithms for real-time operation on a robot in a real-world environment is a plus.
  •  The candidate would have knowledge in one of the following:
    • ROS
    • Linux
    • Docker

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
