Climate Model Development and Evaluation - High Resolution - Postdoctoral Researcher

We have one opening for a Postdoctoral researcher to assist in the creation of a new 3 km global climate model. Needs span the range from parameterization development and evaluation to load balancing and parallelization for GPUs. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division within the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in and development of one or more of the following areas: cloud-resolving model simulation, parameterization development, and climate model performance optimization.
- Design, implement, and analyze techniques in one or more of the above areas.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in atmospheric science, math, computer science, or related field.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: climate model evaluation, parameterization development, and high-performance computing.
- Experience designingand executing innovative simulation experiments.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience running, developing, and/or evaluating cloud-resolving models.
- Experience with microphysical processes and their parameterization.
- Experience programming for supercomputers, particularly in C++ using Kokkos.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)

Note: This is a 2 year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3 years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
