Job Description

The Division Chief Scientist for the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) Division is AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems are used for electronic warfare, control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other uses. In support of this mission, the AES Division Chief Scientist represents AES broadly across the GTRI organization and AES sponsors. The Chief Scientist also has primary responsibility for developing and executing strategic plans to promote AESs technical capabilities and reputation. The Chief Scientist informs and has oversight of AES's Independent Research and Development (IRAD) portfolio and mentors AES personnel in research domains.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Formulate strategic direction and plans for AES Internal Research and Development (IRAD) investments
  • Support the AES Division Chief with oversight of the AES IRAD and Hives portfolio, including the development of concepts, financial oversight, and technical oversight
  • Work with AES researchers and researchers across GTRI to develop Strategic Initiative IRAD concepts with potential for high impact to GTRI and the nation
  • Participate in all ELSYS Chief Scientist Council meetings, including technical reviews, strategy sessions, administrative discussions, and management planning
  • Form strategic relationships with key subject matter experts across ELSYS and from other laboratories
  • Support the AES Division Chief in the formation of division direction and strategy, including managing strategy tool inputs, coordinating sponsor-engagement opportunities, and proposal strategy/review/bid decisions
  • Support the AES Division Chief with Modernization/Equipment requests and business development fund requests
  • Develop and sustain strategic relationships with peer leaders across GTRI and Georgia Tech Resident Instruction, to include research partnerships
  • Develop technical papers for conferences, speak publicly, and present briefings to sponsors and potential sponsors
  • Develop original and innovative contributions that are nationally recognized for their excellence as documented by external peer review
  • Participate in seminars and national symposia while maintaining memberships on national committees and/or offices in professional societies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Bachelors degree and Master's degree required with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or related field  and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Master's degree required with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience focused on developing complex systems
  • Experience with IRAD relating to proposal, execution and/or leadership capacity
  • Experience leading sponsored research projects and sponsor interactions
  • Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with IRAD relating to proposal, execution, and/or leadership capacity
  • Experience managing and providing technical leadership for complex, high-value engineering programs
  • Experience with embedded systems concepts and their implementation
  • Experience with systems design, including architectures, requirements, behavior allocation, and interface design
  • Experience with business development, including concept development, engagement strategy, technical briefs, and proposal development 

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
