Job Description

The Chief Engineer in the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Test Engineering Division (TEN) conducts applied research in Test and Evaluation (T&E), Electronic Warfare (EW), and avionics systems. The Chief Engineer is focused on ensuring successful technical execution across the divisions portfolio through a mixture of providing technical oversight, serving as a technical resource, and ensuring that the divisions researchers have the tools, technologies and processes they need to work effectively and productively. The Chief Engineer works with division management, the division chief scientist, and branch management as appropriate while continuing to work as a researcher contributing to project work. TEN's primary research areas include the development of complex hardware and software systems to enable open-loop and closed-loop testing of EW systems in the laboratory, development of automated test tools, RF and EO/IR threat environment generation, and toolsets to enable EW and avionics test data analysis.  

Job Duties

  • Ensure divisions researchers have the tools, technologies, and processes they need to work effectively and productively; provide staff awareness; promote alignment
  • Improve cross-division and cross-lab communication and information sharing
  • Identify research opportunities and work to facilitate cross-division and cross-lab collaboration aimed at ensuring successful technical project execution
  • Provide technical oversight to projects across the division
  • Serve as a resource to the division for technical challenges arising during project execution
  • Guide divisions technical capability plans by working with division management on capabilities-related portions of the division strategy
  • Advance training and modernization investments support current and anticipated project work
  • Participate in ELSYS Chief Engineer Council
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Bachelor's and Masters degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's and Masters degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Bachelor's and Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, System Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, System Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, System Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in the development and technical management of EW or avionics systems, test systems, or equivalent technologies
  • Experience in EW or related T&E research areas 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing and providing technical leadership for complex, high-value engineering programs
  • Experience in Electronic Warfare systems concepts and their implementation
  • Experience with business development, including concept development, engagement strategy, technical briefs and proposal development
  • Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders
  • Active DoD Secret clearance 

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
