We have an opening for a Scientific Associate Chemistry & Materials Science Technician (C&MS) to support programmatic research including thermal analysis, and a variety of characterization techniques, involving a broad range of materials including polymers, metals, and ceramics in support of the nations nuclear weapons stockpile. You will be responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of various laboratory scale characterization equipment and will routinely interact with professional colleagues, research scientists, and technicians This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Collaborate with scientists and high-level technical personnel and provide advanced technical support in planning, executing and interpreting technical projects, experiments and processes.- Provide original solutions to scientific problems in one or more areas of chemistry, materials science.
- Perform thermal analyses including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal mechanical analysis (TMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
- Perform rheological characterization of various polymers, suspensions, and powders via rotational, capillary, and powder rheometry.
- Characterize the dynamic and quasi-static compression, tension, and bending behavior of various specimens and geometries.
- Report results in written and verbal format in a timely manner.
- Operate and maintain a suite of laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance of thermal, rheological, and mechanical analysis instruments, including troubleshooting, scheduling regular maintenance and repairs.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and functional laboratory environment. Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
- Provide technical advice and direction to technicians and early career staff, making frequent decisions using a high degree of independent discretion and judgment.- Perform other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree in Polymer Science (Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or Physical Chemistry) or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Highly advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities in materials engineering, including theory, design, documentation and operating basic experimental systems.
- Experience in thermal, rheological, and mechanical analysis and fundamental understanding of a specific area of chemistry, materials science, engineering, or environmental technology as applied to specific applications.
- Sufficient written and verbal communication skills necessary to communicate results of research and prepare written reports.
- Ability to solve complex materials and materials process problems.
- Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding variable technical complex problems.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment with commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.
- Proven track record for completing projects and delivering results on time and on budget.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience planning and directing work with technical objectives, estimating effort, setting milestones, and managing within a designated budget.
- Coursework in polymer science and engineering.
- Experience in polymer formulation, characterization, and processing.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
