The Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division (NACS) in the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate has two openings for Postdoctoral Researchers. They will investigate the fundamental chemical and physical processes that can influence the chemical behavior of radionuclides resulting from a nuclear detonation. The positions will support a multi-disciplinary team applying computational, analytical, and experimental approaches to the study of nuclear debris.This position is in the Chemical and Isotopic Signatures group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Conduct fundamental research into the influence and magnitude of environmental effects on the formation of nuclear debris and debris chemistry.
-Perform and/or interpret compositional analyses of debris samples or thermodynamic modeling relevant to formation processes.
-Participate in development and testing of experimental approaches to investigate the condensation behavior of a cooling plasma.
-Analyze and interpret experimental data and compare with model predictions.
-Function as an independent researcher with a high-level of attention to detail.
-Work well with an integrated, interdisciplinary team.
-Maintain professional and institutional visibility through participation in conferences.
-Document and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
-Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
-Recent PhD in chemistry or related field.
-Experience applying isotope ratio mass spectrometry to address research questions.
-Experience operating and interpreting data output from a range of spatially resolved analytical techniques (e.g., transmission electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy).
-Experience in statistical analysis of data including uncertainty quantification or sensitivity studies.
-Proficient written, verbal, and organizational skills necessary to effectively collaborate within small and large work groups.
-Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
Desired Qualifications
-Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature.
-Experience using computational modeling tools or programming languages to interpret complex datasets.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a 2 year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3 years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
