We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher with experience in one or more of the following areas: ceramics processing; inorganic chemical synthesis; and/or solid state synthesis, to participate on a team responsible for developing new transparent optical ceramics and phosphors for advanced devices.You will work collaboratively with personnel across the Laboratory and in particular with scientists working on development of new transparent ceramics. Potential areas of research include these and related experimental fields: materials science, inorganic chemistry and ceramics fabrication. This position is in the Advanced Materials Synthesis group of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Plan, design, document, trouble-shoot and execute experiments in development of new transparent ceramic materials and phosphors.
- Synthesize inorganic powders by various means, for example: flame synthesis, solid-state synthesis, precipitation, and combustion methods.
- Work with scientific team on the fabrication of transparent ceramics, including use of spray drying, green body fabrication, sintering and hot isostatic processing.
- Collaborate with other scientists and technical personnel in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals on materials development activities.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Assist in writing proposals to secure funding, and in establishing new research directions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in materials science, chemistry or related scientific field.
- Experience in inorganic synthesis of powders by flame synthesis, solid-state synthesis, precipitation, and/or combustion methods.
- Experience in high temperature consolidation of ceramics using methods such as controlled atmosphere sintering.
- Knowledgeable of the concepts of solid-state chemistry including phase diagrams of inorganic solids and crystallography.
- Experience in one or more of: methods of microscopy, thermal analysis of condensed systems, rheology of powder-based slurries.
- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in the fabrication of transparent ceramics, melt-growth of crystals, powder consolidation via sintering, or fabrication of glasses.
- Experience in additive manufacturing techniques.

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
