Project/Unit Description

The Surface-Based Space Surveillance (SBSS) Branch is part of GTRIs Air & Missile Defense Division within the Sensors & Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL). The Branch is physically located within the GTRI Colorado Springs Field Office on the Catalyst Campus. The Branch consists of 5 senior researchers whose current work is focused on ground-based RF or optical sensors applied to space surveillance and missile defense.

Job Purpose

Lead multiple sponsored research projects. Manage Branch (7-15 FTE) administrative activities including hiring, appraisals and sponsored project success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or contribute to white papers and proposals
  • Seek out and respond to opportunities for new research
  • Support presentations and travel to support new business development
  • Ensure that the branch is continuing to pursue new and novel research efforts through judicious use of internal R&D funding
  • Lead branch hiring activities including development of position vacancy announcements, resume reviews, interviews and onboarding
  • Determine branch hiring needs
  • Lead role on manpower planning for branch personnel
  • Conduct staff appraisals
  • Support Monthly Project Status Review meetings
  • Coordinate with division leadership as required

Additional Responsibilities

GTRI is seeking to fill the role of Branch Head within SBSS. The role of Branch Head includes performing administrative duties, conducting sponsored research, and developing new business. The anticipated breakdown of time across the three areas of responsibility are 5%, 80%, and 15%, respectively. GTRI seeks to fill the position with an individual who has a strong technical background and demonstrated business development within the space surveillance community. The individual would be expected to develop new business addressing the evolving challenges of defense in space. As the portfolio expands, the branch head is expected to develop and grow the research staff to support the funded work.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 15 years of technical experience in radar or other sensor domains
  • At least 10 years of successful business development experience
  • Experience writing or directly contributing to one or more technical proposals
  • Experience directing all aspects of a project to include financials, staffing, deliverables, and technical contributions
  • Experience interfacing with DoD customers on existing and potential programs
  • Experience serving in a position of management at some level within an organization

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • At least 20 years of technical experience in radar or other sensor domains with direct ties to space surveillance community
  • At least 15 years of successful business development with some inroads into the space surveillance community
  • Active in the space surveillance community with ties to specific programs or sponsors

This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

  • 14 years of related experience with a Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineer, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study
  • 12 years of related experience with a Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineer, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study
  • 9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineer, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.

Pay

$163,890 - $215,600
