Biomedical Software Developer

The Biomedical Software Developer will support research initiatives within the Brown Center for Biomedical Informatics (BCBI), a transdisciplinary group leading initiatives that spans the full spectrum of biomedicine and health care. He/she will join Brown’s Data Science Practice, a central team of data scientists who support a range of data-intensive projects across the University. The Biomedical Software Developer will primarily support projects at BCBI, but will have opportunities to explore other projects supported by the Data Science Practice.


Responsibilities will include prototyping, developing, and deploying software that supports projects led by BCBI-affiliated researchers.


The Biomedical Software Developer’s principal efforts will be focused on the development of software and web applications for managing, analyzing, and visualizing biomedical and healthcare datasets, which may be defined by work supported by extramural grants and contracts. The Biomedical Software Developer will be an active participant in exploring creative new approaches for leveraging heterogeneous data to support biomedical research, healthcare, and policy initiatives in alignment with the vision for BCBI.


This is a three year fixed-term staff position, with the possibility of extension contingent upon available funding.


Roles and Responsibilities:

• Develop, test, and automate analytic assets and software and support transition into production.

• Provide analytical throughput for data needs in order to drive analysis and outcome development.

• Develop and implement novel data visualization strategies to summarize results.

• Develop and implement tools for automatic report generation to be presented to both internally and to external partners.

• Troubleshoot data issues, validate result sets, recommend, and implement process improvements.

• Support BCBI Data Scientist team with scripting, troubleshooting, and automate coding of BCBI assets.

• Effectively communicate with BCBI stakeholders to elicit, capture, develop, and implement customer requirements.


Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree

• Strong software engineering skills and a track record of developing software using Java.

• Experience with—or an interest in—software development for the OpenMRS project, an open-source electronic health records (EHR) system.

• Working knowledge with most of the following: Linux operating system, programming languages (e.g., Java, Ruby, R, or Julia), databases (e.g., MySQL or Oracle), Web languages and technologies (e.g., Ruby on Rails or D3), high-performance and distributed computing, and algorithm design and evaluation.

• Two years’ experience in a quantitative, computational, and software development field.

• Demonstrated experience in processing and analysis of large biomedical and health datasets.

• Ability to work both independently and as a team member.

• Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines, and an eagerness to take ownership of challenging and open-ended assignments.

• Effective at communicating with audiences whose technical backgrounds vary widely.

• Experience with biomedical and health data (particularly electronic health record [EHR] data) a plus
