Bioengineering and Advanced Fabrication Group - Postdoctoral Researcher

We have multiple openings for Postdoctoral Researchers to work in our Bioengineering and Advanced Fabrication group. You will collaborate with a team of engineers and scientist, both internally and externally, to complete research and development projects on selected topics/areas focused on bioengineering and biofabrication. These positions are in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Optimize and develop novel engineered biological systems for biologically relevant functionalities, disease models, and validation of computational biology models.
  • Develop and optimize techniques and procedures for stereolithographic and extrusion-based 3D bioprinting.
  • Develop and test biomaterials for biocompatibility, process compatibility, and functionality.
  • Establish novel methods of cultivating and manipulating bacterial and/or mammalian cell-based constructs.
  • Work closely with project team members across disciplines to deliver timely results.
  • Publish research results in internal reports, peer-reviewed journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • PhD in Biomedical, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Solid background and expertise in one or more of the following areas: 3D bioprinting techniques or technology development (e.g. stereolithography, extrusion-based), microfluidic systems for manipulating cell environments, biomaterials optimization and characterization, mammalian-microbial interfaces, developing novel engineering in vitro platforms and/or performing experimental validations of computational models.
  • Experience in cell culture: mammalian and/or bacterial cells.
  • Experience with experiment design, data acquisition, programming, and/or device characterization.
  • Ability to perform as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary, and diverse team environment.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
